There exist some DivX players that do. Most don't.
Mp4 is a container format that is a form of mpg. If you already have your DivX player and it plays mpg files but not mp4, one trick to try is to rename the suffix (file type) of the file to .mpg. It works for some players and some encodings, but it's not guaranteed.

Yes VLC media player will play .m4v files.
No only MP4's for video. It will not play MOV, AVI, DIVX or FLV. Not tried any others yet. I'm hoping to be able to hack it and change this as I want it to play FLV (You Tube / Web) and AVI without having to keep re-rendering the video all the time!
An mp4 player is a electric divice that plays songs and is a higher editon of the mp3 player it will only work if you have head phones
Regular standalone DVD players can only read movie DVD's (those are in MPEG-2, and if you view them in Windows Explorer, you see a folder structure with VIDEO_TS, and files like .VOB .IFO and .BUP). Newer DVD players that are DivX-certified can (in addition to the above) read data DVD's with an AVI file encoded in the DivX codec. Most of the time, you will fail to play MP4 on DVD player unless the DVD players have the "Nero Digital" label on them.
