Some PS3s play PS2 and PS1 games, others do not.
The answer is correct, but they have not made a PS3 that has played PS2 games once they learned it was not technically possible. The main reason besides cost is because while the PS2 games were licensed the license did not give Sony the right to demand that the game be capable of playing on a PS3 and only the PS2. They could not force anyone to help make the games capable of playing on the PS3 without any problems, in fact some of the companies had merged and others had gone out of business. They soon stopped making the PS3 that were able to play PS2 games. Only the PS3 models with 4 USB ports can play PS2 games and those can only play some of the titles.
