All warmblooded animals can contract and pass rabies, but is not common in squirrels - at least in North America where skunks, foxes, bats, cats and dogs are the main carriers.

I should mention also, that if you suspect you have contacted a rabid animal (especially if bitten by it) contact a doctor as soon as possible. This is not meant to frighten anyone but rabies is always fatal if not treated. The incubation period is very long - several weeks to several months - but the disease is treatable.

You can suspect rabies in an animal if it has frothy saliva around its mouth, or if a normally timid animal has lost its fear of humans, or is extremely aggressive, snapping at anything in sight. In the final stages the animal can also appear lethargic and dopey, again with no fear of humans.

If you have approached such an animal and were bitten see a doctor.

No, they cannot. They can bite humans, but they can't eat humans.
