Can a cat mate with its close relatives?

Of course it can, just as you can mate with your close relatives. That doesn't mean it's a good idea. Breeders, many of whom are not concerned with such trivial matters as animal welfare, think nothing of in-breeding if it means fostering particular characteristics that make an animal more valuable. However, in-breeding invariably leads to all kinds of genetic abnormalities and health problems that will cause misery for offspring.
