Yes, if the child inherited the A blood type from the father and the Rh positive blood type from the mother.

The mother has neither A nor B blood type genes and at least one Rh positive gene (possibly one Rh negative gene).

The father has at least one A blood type gene (no B blood type gene) and two Rh negative genes.

The possibilities for the child's blood type are:

  1. O negative (not possible if father has two A blood type genes or mother has two Rh positive genes)
  2. O positive (not possible if father has two A blood type genes)
  3. A negative (not possible if mother has two Rh positive genes)
  4. A positive (always a possibility with these parents)

In this case, if the mother is known to be the biological mother of the child and if the mother is B-, it is not possible for the father to be the biological father of the child and have the type O+. In other words, the father is not the father of the child in this case.

If you are trying to determine paternity of a child, you will not like the answer. First off blood type is not a good way to determine paternity as there are several combinations that can result.

Obviously if paternity is a question the 2 known factors will be the mother's blood type and the child's blood type. If the mother is type A and the child is type O -- the father can be anyone with a blood type of A, B, or O.. the only blood type the father cannot be is AB (unless of mutation), which doesnt help much, considering that is the rarest blood type --- thus, to determine paternity through blood type.. the father can be anyone of about 98.2% of the male population.

So to answer your question... yes, that combination is very possible

That is actually a genetic impossiblity. There are a couple of explanations however. The first one is that the child had a bad blood test and he is actually something else, or the mother has the same issue, or the father has the same issue. The reason being is that A blood type will almost always be passed on.

AA + OO = AO

AO + OO = AO or OO

So as you can tell B is never a player in the equations. The child of type A and type O would either be A or O.

Yes they can. They could also be O positive or negative. This reason being is the Father could have the genome of AA or AO. The mother would always have OO because A is a dominant trait and therefore if you have the A gene you will have type A blood. If I was able to draw boxes it would be easier to explain so I will try my best with just words.

AA + OO = AO always and the child will always have A

AO + OO = AO or OO so this child could have type O or type A.

With the Rh factor it is a little more confusing. It is passed on the same way that blood type is passed on. So since the father is negative and the mother could be negative then the child will be negative. If the mother is positive it is a 50-50 chance on what the child will receive. I hope this answers your question.

Yes. Each person has 2 copies of the A/B/O antigen and either + or -. If mom is Type A-, she could have AA- or AO-. If Dad is O+ he must have OO+. There is a 50% chance that baby will be AO (type A) and 50% that baby will be OO (type O). Because the parents have different rH factor, baby could be either:

A+

A-

O+

O-

Each possibility is equal, 1 in 4 chance (25%).

Yes a child can be O+ if the father is A+ and the mother is A-. This is possible when the genotype of the mother is IAIO Rh- and that of the father is IAIO Rh-. The only other offspring possible is A+ and no Rh- progenies are possible as there will always be transfer of Rh antigen from father in the offspring.
