From the age of 6 months on, the mature female dog will come into heat every 6 months. The heat cycle lasts approximately 2-3 weeks. During that time they will ovulate and that is when they can become pregnant, with a male dog's help of course. There is only a window of about 3 -4 days that the egg can be fertilized. So yes the female dog has to be in heat to become pregnant. You should spay your female dog though if you want her to live a longer and healthier life.

no because if the male dog is fixed he can't impregnate any dog... that's the point in getting a dog fixed...

∙ 14y agoNo, but females can have "silent heats". Male dogs are the only ones that can tell they are in heat, because they do not have any of the usual signs of being in heat, such as disharge and temperament changes. But they are in heat nonetheless, so they can get pregnant during silent heats.

∙ 14y agoYes, females in heat can be spayed. Be sure, however, to discuss with your Vet the increased risks to the dog -- including more pain -- and possible additional costs of doing the surgery while the dog's in heat rather than waiting until after her cycle.

All that has been removed is his nuts and sperm.
