Yes, a nursing mother can get pregnant. While breastfeeding does suppress your menstrual cycle, it does not always stop it. If you are not ready to get pregnant again you will need some form or protection. Stay away from the pill or any other kind of birth control that involves hormones as these will be passed to your baby when you are nursing.

Breastfeeding will delay you from getting pregnant but its better to have some contraceptive barrier to be safe or consult doctor to give you a Birth Control pill that is safe while you are breastfeeding.

Yes you can. During the first 6 months after birth if a women is breast feeding around the clock and the baby is not getting any supplements of cereal or formula - she is probably not ovulating.

The problem with this in practice is that every woman is a little different, there is no guarantee that you won't start ovulating at 3, 4 or 5 months - so it helps for you to be aware of the changes in your cervical mucus as well, since we usually ovulate before having that first period.

Once the baby starts on cereal and/or starts sleeping through the night (some times) you can count on ovulation and menstrual cycles returning fairly quickly.

Yes it is very possible. While breastfeeding slows the return of the normal menstrual cycle, it does not prevent it. It is very unwise to rely on breastfeeding as a contraceptive method. So nursing mothers, when you return to sexual intimacy with your husband after having a baby, and are not ready for the possibility of another pregnancy it is important to consider how to best prevent an unplanned pregnancy. There are two other factors that make this a bit of a challenge. First, a woman may be fertile after giving birth without the warning sign of a normal period. That is to say you may fertile without even knowing it. Second, while you are nursing it is very important to stay away from any drugs (the pill, norplant etc.) that will put dangerous levels of hormones into your milk supply. Those levels of hormones that are safe for an adult woman could be very damaging to an infant. That being said, while you are nursing it is best to use a condom or any other sort of a barrier method to prevent pregnancy.

Yes! You can get pregnant almost immediately after you have your baby. Doctors recommend not having unprotected sex for at least 6 months after you deliver.

Absolutely. I've known women who were breastfeeding and became pregnant as little as one and a half months after giving birth.
