The light is set up so that when no power is being fed out from the alternator the light circuit is grounded and lights the indicator lamp. When you first turn the key on it will light. When the engine is started and the alternator is excited it will feed power out and the circuit will no longer be closed turning the light out. If the light is on it may be a bad alternator, wiring or just a fuse. There are 4 fuses involved with that system. If the light is on then the main ignition fuse is ok. The gauge fuse shouldn't have effect but I would check it. There are also a 5 amp and a 100 amp fuses for it in the fuse and relay compartment. The battery could be going dead from the alternator not recharging the battery. Hence the light coming on indicating it not charging. Or from a drain on the battery. Since your indicator lamp is on I would opt for it not charging. Almost any parts store can test the alternator for you of you take it in to them. This will verify it is a problem with your alternator and not the wiring or fuse.
