Most piercings that are fresh will close up within a matter of an hour to a few hours of the jewelry being out, and even a well healed piercing will close up after a few days of no jewelry being worn...unless the piercing is stretched, but even then, you have at most two to three days of wearing nothing before it begins to shrink.
The short answer is no. Earrings are usually not a proper shape for a navel piercing, and are rarely of a proper size and diameter.
They are if you have short hair
As long as it took you to get up to what ever gauge you are at it will take that amount of time for the issue to shrink down. If you tore the piercing then you will see what looks like cat's butts on your ears, guess what short of surgical assistance you are stuck with it.
infections
If you want the piercing to close up, then yes, take it out. If you want to keep the piercing and avoid pain or infection then it is best to leave the same earring in for at least two months, after that you can change freely between earrings. If the original earring is causing problems (ie. seeming too long, or too short) then go back to your piercer for advice.
bad idea
Just take it out and leave it. Unless you have had it stretched, if you have stretched or had a larger hole cut i would suggest seeing a plastic surgeon. If not, and you have a normal navel piercing, just take it out, it will heal and close up and be unnoticeable over a short period of time.
