Xanax® (generic: Alprazolam) belongs to the class of drugs known as benzodiazapines, and is primarily used for short-term treatment of anxiety disorders.
Although the mechanism of action is incompletely understood, generally, Alprazolam works by binding to receptors in the brain that affect muscle relaxation, sleep, anti-convulsive activity, motor coordination, and memory.
Alprazolam has a rapid onset of action -- it works quickly to relieve feelings of anxiety -- but also has a short half-life (6-12 hours) compared to other drugs in its class, meaning it leaves the body fairly quickly, making the anti-anxiety effects relatively short-lived. These properties increase the risk of dependence and addiction, particularly with longterm use.
Patients should never stop using Alprazolam abruptly. Acute benzodiazapine withdrawal is a medical emergency that may result in death if not treated appropriately.
None of the benzodiazapines, including Alprazolam, are FDA-approved for use in children, but doctors sometimes prescribe this medication off-label. Never give a child Alprazolam unless the medication is specifically prescribed for the child and monitored by a physician.
For more in-depth information, read the Alprazolam fact sheet listed under Related Links, below.

Only a doctor can tell you that. You need to consult a doctor before giving any prescription medicine to a child.
Never, ever without a doctor's order! Xanax is extremely addictive! Most US doctors would prescribe therapy before ever getting a child hooked on Xanax!
