Yes a pool will work without a sump, the sump is good for pulling heated water down to the deeper end so that the pool water is the same temp every where you swim.
They dont really act as a cleaner for the deep end as most sump grilles are raised and so dirt ect does not enter the sump easily.
We blank off many sumps that have leaking lines as its cheaper to blank then to dig the sump line/pot up.

∙ 13y agoAbsolutely. There are thousands of old pools with copper pipes with leaky main drains that have been deleted and filled in rather than fixing them operating just fine. As long as you don't install a pump that over taxes the skimmers capacity you should have no problem keeping the pool clean. Most of these older pools used 1 1/2 inch suction lines and a 3/4 or 1 HP pump is about the maximum.

Main drain sucks from bottom-as long as its under water its ok to run and have the returns just shoot water down into shallow pool.

You run the pool filter through the main drain by moving your valve next to your pool pump to main drain only. This is usually a Jandy Value or the like. Usually there are three positions on this value. One for both main drain and skimmers. One for skimmers only and one for main drain only. As a precautionary warning. Only adjust this value with the Pump OFF. Doing it while the pump is running may cause significant damage to the value. No one needs additional pool repairs if it can be avoided. Most pools in California have the main drain line connected to the front port of the skimmer and use a diverter valve in the bottom to regulate the ratio of bottom or skimmer suction. Jandy and Ortega valves are both designed to be adjusted with the pump running with no fear of damage. Multiport valves should only be adjusted with the pump off.

If you are talking about,pluging off your bottom drain and just using your skimmer only to run your pool,then you can buy a plug made of rubber or cork to fit inside the hole inside your bottom drain. Just make sure it is in secure. We do this every winter,when we close our pool,because our filter is below our pool. If we don't water will run back in to the pipes and could freeze and bust the underground pipes. We have been doing this since 1977. Good luck.
