Yes, theoretically, but if it's eating a healthy diet, including lots of hay, then a rabbit won't over eat enough cardboard to make itself ill. Lots of rabbits like to chew and shred cardboard, and if a rabbit eats some (even if it seems like a lot), that's fine -- it counts as roughage (fibre -- a good thing!). We're talking plain cardboard, here -- unbleached, minimal colours, no slick glossy paper or labels, no staples or tape. (See the link below.)

But if a rabbit is really hungry because it isn't eating the right diet, or if a rabbit is really disturbed for some other reason (maybe if it's being neglected or not cared for properly), then it could theoretically eat too much cardboard, make itself sick, and eventually die if doesn't get to a vet.

Under normal conditions a rabbit will not over eat. But given being put in a cage and compound that with boredom and a rabbit could overeat. Will it cause a heart attack or something?? Maybe. When you put a rabbit in a cage you need to furnish it with adequate food but do not overfeed. Check with a rabbit breeder or veterinarian to determine how much your rabbit should be eating. Small breeds need 4 to 6 oz. med breeds 6 to 8 oz. and giant breeds 8 to 10 oz. per day of rabbit pellets.

Can a rabbit litter box be a cardboard box?

You cannot use a cardboard box that is a full square with a hole in it. That is more commonly used for a little playhouse/privacy for your rabbit. You can use a lid of a cardboard box, but shorten it for the size of your rabbit's size. Place a small wooden block for your rabbit to gnaw on, as he/she might nibble the cardboard ( so the block is distracting the rabbit. ). Be sure to put some rabbit treats in the litter box (if it is the rabbits first time using one) so he/she makes it an often place to use. I have a rabbit myself X) ! Sorry if i went on.
