Solar flares are not generally dangerous to people, and I am not aware that anyone has ever died as a result of one - yet.

However, solar flares CAN cause problems in our technological environment, and to the extent that we are more and more dependent on our technology, other things can cause injury or death when that technology fails as a result of a flare.

The principle is called induction; strong electromagnetic fields can "induce" an electrical current in a wire. The longer the wire and the more intense the field, the higher the current. Before the early 1800s, there were generally no long wires suspended in the air, but starting with Samuel Morse and the development of the telegraph, people all over the world began stringing telegraph wires from city to city and all around the world. During strong solar storms, the current induced into telegraph wires was high enough to start fires.

Solar flares and the resultant solar storms can disrupt radio signals, destroy computers, and have even knocked out a satellite in space. If a massive flare were to cause problems on the International Space Station, it could easily prove fatal to the astronauts.

And with more and more of our lives dependent on computers, we will encounter greater disruption when a solar storm starts knocking out electronic systems. As I said, I'm not aware that a computer controlling a medical device has ever malfunctioned during a storm, but I can understand that this could be deadly to the patient if - WHEN - it does.

An eclipse- solar or lunar- does NOT kill you. The moon is going to block light from the sun for 2 minutes. That is ALL that an eclipse does. Chill.
