Legally, they can represent all the people on one side of the case. That is not always a good idea, however, because the individual interests may vary. For example, some people might want to settle the case, and others might want to continue to fight.

Do lawyers choose their own cases?

In New Jersey, yes. Public defenders are more limited in that they have an assigned case load. Many rules govern who lawyers can't represent; for example, a lawyer can't represent two co-defendants on the same trial, contrary to what you see on television. If you are referring to a different prosecutor taking over the case -- it is not always advisable to change horses in mid-stream, but there is nothing in law that says they can't be changed. Very much the same way as the police officer on your 'beat' can be changed, or your mail delivery person can be changed.

Can lawyer discuss separate clients within own firm?

Discuss them with whom? Except under very specific circumstances, it's illegal for a lawyer to reveal information a client has told him or her without the client's permission. Other attorneys within the same firm generally can be told because they fall under the same restrictions; this wouldn't be the case in the unlikely event that different attorneys from the same firm are representing opposite sides to a case.
