Balsa wood is very light, and very strong for its weight. It is widely used in model airplanes.

Balsa wood had its moment of glory during World War II. Aluminium was in short supply in Britain, which caused difficulties to aircraft manufacturers. De Havilland Aircraft got around this by making a sandwich - half an inch of balsa between two thinsheets of plywood. The material was then used to build a wooden 'plane, glued together. This airplane, christened the Mosquito, was met with derision until it was realised that it could fly both higher and faster than any German fighter of the period.

Balsa wood is not good for anything unless you want to make models of airplanes and ships. It is extremely fragile, and you can actually cut it with a butter knife. So if you want to build something with generally cheap wood, I would use pine, or if you want something a little stronger but more pricey, use cherry.

Yes but only on model houses...

Balsa is a very very soft wood and does not make for good solid construction..

It is used in some applications for siding and roofing.....

Maybe for doll house furniture. It's far too light and weak for real furniture. More suitable for hobby aircraft.
