Yes - as per S.494 of the Criminal Code, they can arrest someone for anyone they find committing and indictable offence.

Additionally depending on the municipality, provincial enforcement powers may be granted providing arrest. Example being the TPA in Ontario can be given to bylaw officers to enforce on city owned properties such as parks/transit systems.

Yes, because Police officer are deemed to be on duty for 24 hours seven days a week.

On the other hand the law does not compell one to act against an criminal activities, unless its express by statute or by law. Then a police officer will be held liable if he choose to not act against an crime (activities that are in contrasts the law) regardless of being on or off duty, he is allow to carry his appointment certificate whether on or off duty and can provide such a card whenever making any inquiries or arrest.

Do small town police officers have state wide arrest authority?

From what i have heard, a police officer is also a peace officer. Peace officers have the power to make warrentless arrest if a crime is committed in their presence. It's really nation wide. If a cop or another peace officer with the powers of arrestsees someone killing somebody or breaking into a house or robbing someone, they are perfectly able to arrest that person on the spot. Even civilians have this power (citizens arrest}. To avoid alot of hassle, the officer generally will after the arrest call the local law enforcement, identify themselves as a peace officer, show the proper id {badge, id card and a weapon if they have one}and then make a statement.

If you were friends with a chief of police and he was able to get you a ligitimate police badge registered so you can arrest people but dont have to work what kind of charges can you have against you?

Police chiefs are not generally in the habit of handing out badges, even to their friends.A badge, "registered" (not even sure what that means) or not, does not give the bearer powers of arrest. Law enforcement officers must be appointed by a law enforcement agency and certified by the state before they have police powers. If you were to try and arrest someone with just a badge, you would be subject to charges of impersonation of a law enforcement officer and possible false imprisonment. These are serious charges, often felonies.

Can a police officer arrest someone for a misdermeanor not committed in his presence?

In some cases, yes. He can arrest on a misdemeanor arrest warrant. Officers are frequently obligated to make an arrest for domestic violence if they have probable cause to believe the domestic violence has occurred, even though they did not witness it. An officer can usually make an arrest in a traffic accident investigation, even though he did not witness the accident.

Can law enforcement officers be on call?

Yes, law enforcement are always subject to recall to duty at other than their "normal" duty hours. In most jurisdictions Law Enforcement Officers are considered, by law, to always be "on duty" 24 hours a day and must be vigilant for violations of the law even when otherwise "off duty."

Can warrants get transferred?

(in the US) An outstanding arrest warrant can be good anywhere, and can be served by any law enforcement officer - interstate warrants can be posted and the 'wanting' state will even extradite the wanted subject. It is not clear what you mean by a 'transferred' warrant. Transferred by who - to who - for what purpose?

Can a security officer arrest a person for a traffic violation on his post?

No most traffic is not even a misdemeanor

Should a police officer be on duty on Christmas day?

I think that for every person the duty comes first and then comes the festivals. and so the officer should be on duty , as it is mainly during the festive seasons that many try to violate the rules....so no.. the police officer should not go off... but if some one can come for the duty only then the officer can take offAdded: This is NOT even an opinion matter. It is an established FACT that througout the US law enforcement is a 24/7/365 operation, just like firefighting, EMS, hospital staff, public utility workers, and other essential occupations far too numerous to even begin to mention here.

Are there circumstances in which a non commissioned officer can give orders to a commissioned officer?

Yes. If the noncommissioned officer is mp and the commissioned officer is under arrest. That's about it. Even an e-9 can only suggest a lower officer do something.

Can the constable arrest the sherrif?

Of course a Sheriff can arrest! They are Law Enforcement officers, except they typically work for a county (rather than a city). Sheriffs, by the way, are the historically oldest law enforcement type in the US, I believe.
