Well,the product that is actually toxic isTheobromine and dogs metabolize it a lot slower than humans do. And it depends on the SIZE of the dog to the AMOUNT and KIND of chocolate it eats.

To put it in perspective, a 20-pound dog would have to eat 1.8oz. of baking chocolate, 5.3oz. of dark chocolate, or 11.2 oz. of milk chocolate for it to actually be considered toxic. A 50-pound dog would have to eat 4.5oz. of baking, 12.8oz. of dark or 2.4lbs of milk chocolate for it to be toxic.

Toxcity signs that occur usually within around 12 hours of poisoning include: vomiting, diarrhea, tembling, excitement, nervousness, increased urination, muscle spasms, and seizures.

So, yes, your dog can eat that hershey kiss (.16oz) that fell on the floor and you don't have to freak out. But, I still wouldn't recommend giving your dog a piece of your chocolate bar every day regardless. :)

Chocolate is like food poisoning to dogs. They are definitely NOT allowed to eat chocolate. Dogs just shouldn't eat human food because it's not very good for them. It would be the best for your dog if he/she sticks with eating dog food.

Amounts of theobromine vary by type of chocolate and brand. A dog who has eaten a toxic dose of theobromine will start to vomit, develop diarrhea and/or become hyperactive. As time passes a dog's heart will start beating ever faster, the dog will urinate more, become more restless and pant a lot. Should your dog accidently eat chocolate, it is important to know what type and roughly how much, e.g.

White chocolate: contains the least amount of theobromine and it would take roughly 200 oz per pound of body weight to cause the above syptoms.

Milk Chocolate: 1 oz of milk chocolate per pound of body weight to cause the above syptoms.

Sweet cocoa: 0.3 oz of sweet cocoa per pound of body weight to cause the above syptoms.

Baking Chocolate: 0.1 oz of baking chocolate per pound of body weight to cause the above syptoms.

As a rule, the higher the cocoa content, the more dangerous the chocolate is for your dog

Good pet stores will offer chocolate substitutes that look and (supposedly) taste like chocolate, which are safe for dogs and do not contain theobromine.

Chocolate is safe in small portions but do not feed to them regularly, it gives them "the runs" and could eventually give them cancer and they could die. so overall i don't think so.

Chocolate is terribly unsafe for dogs. The acid in there stomachs do not have the capability to digest chocolate, making them get backed up and sick.
