In one way, yes you can say that they do have emotions. But Bettas have great personalities. You can tell if something is wrong with them, or if they're happy, etc. For instance, when you're about to feed your Betta, they swim rapidly at you, or towards the top of the tank?
They're wonderful creatures. Take care of them, heck, even talk to them. Show some love. :3
They'll definitely be more affectionate towards you.

∙ 6y agoyes because believe it or not, they breath oxygen. that's why they swim to the surface and open their mouths. if there's no gap for air then they will drown.
beta fish cannot drowned. even if you take the out of the water for like 5 sec. and put them back in the water they will still be alive, frightend, but alive.
