Fish generally go down to the bottom of the pond where the water does not freeze and sort of hibernate for the winter. That is why it is important to make your pond so deep that the water will not freeze all the way to the bottom. (www.rosepond.com)

That depends. If they live in a small body of water that is completely frozen top to bottom, then no. However, fish and other animals that live in a body of water that only freezes on top but remains unfrozen below and in liquid form can survive as long as there is oxygen and food present in the water.

They can survive at the bottom of a pond if it is deep enough to have water at the bottom rather than ice. They will not survive being frozen solid.

How deep does a goldfish pond need to be?

It needs to be atleast 2 ft deep if you want to keep the fish in the cold weather however i would suggest going much deeper to be on the safe size, a small pond can have steep sides to dig to about 3 ft and there will be no problems with the fish in cold weather, other than that it is not important how deep the pond is, as long as they can swim freely.

Can koi stand cold water?

Yes, if the pond water is cold it won't bother them. They stay at the bottom of the pond even when the top is covered with ice. They come back to the surface when the Springtime temperature is 55 degrees. We have been raising Koi for six years. If you mean cold water from your kitchen sink, you have to put a treatment in the water so they won't die.

Why do fish eat very little during the winter?

Well if they are pond fish, It is because of the cold weather and the cold temperature slows them down and they don't need to eat as much.
