Very many people believe live lobsters, crabs, and other live crustaceans should be frozen before cooking. Freezing (wrap them first in a kitchen towel) sends them gently off to sleep, so when you put them into boiling water they feel no pain. The brief freezing period to ensure they are killed humanely is not sufficient to affect the flavour.
Some can, when thawed!
Forever. Seriously, though, if you are asking about eating a lobster that has died, they start to deteriorate rapidly after death. Unfortunately, there are seafood companies that will sell lobsters (cooked and/or frozen) that died in their tanks - and you have no idea of how long they sat around before being processed. I believe they are called "stills". Lobsters are best if they are live until right before cooking.
It is actually illegal in someplaces to boil them alive. The more humane way to cook them is by first freezeng them that way they don't suffer. There are studies demonstrating that lobsters feel pain and also suffer. Let's be responsable! if we kill to eat, the least we can do is provide a decent death to the animals. We owe them that.
Live lobsters do not squeal before going into the pot to cook. Lobsters do not make any noise. They do not have vocal cords. Studies have shown that lobsters do not feel pain.
