Whiplash is a neck injury usually associated with rear end car collisions. Any blow from the back can cause a similar problem (sports etc.) In a whiplash incident the neck is hyper-extended backwards straining or ripping neck tendons or compressing neck vertebrae or disks. The rupture of these tissues impinges on the spinal nerves causing extreme pain. The similar motion of the head forward does not cause similar problems as the chin stops the hyper-extension. Lateral forces cause a different problem due to the brain sloshing about in the skull.
