Only if the mechanic is abusive and does not follow proper procedure
I don't know if this is your trouble, but I had the same situation or similar. It was explained to me that the exhaust manifold on maxima's have a tendency to heat up and warp; separating them from the engine exhaust ports and the bolt breaks. I think you need to replace the exhaust manifold. It is a bit expensive having a professional do the job. Well worth the cash. At least to me.
sounds like you use a bad mechanic a good mechanic would replace a cracked exhaust manifold to start with if you can smell gas, there is obvioulsy a leak in the fuel system. this needs to be found as it is a fire hazard

They are before or after your precats depending on year and model. 91-93 have a single O2 sensor in the exhaust manifold, as they have no precats. I believe the 94-95 have 1 sensor before the precat, and one after to monitor the O2 in the exhaust gas. 96+ have 4 O2 sensors. Two before the precats, one on the front, one on the rear, while having two after the precats, on the front bank, and the rear bank. The precats are located after the exhaust manifold, directly before the downpipe.
I have a 1990 Pontiac sunbird and i was only able to find one, it was behind the exhaust manifold on the block. I myself am having problems finding the other. I hope this helps.
The advantages of having dual exhaust, if it is a true dual exhaust, include increased gas mileage, cooler engine temperature, and more engine horsepower. However, if it is not a true dual exhaust, it doesn't matter how many exhaust ports there are, there will be no advantage.
The rattle might be a loose heat shield but the loud exhaust can only be a hole somewhere. start at the manifold an work your way back listening and feeling for leaks.
