How does a four stroke exhaust power valve work?

Valve operation: The valves are generally powered by an electronic actuator, which activates (opens) at a certain engine RPM, ideally the actuator would be tuned to operate the valve continuously over the entire rev range, with the valve blocking the flow at low rpm, and opening up to allow free flow of exhaust gases at high rpm. Why it works? The 4 stroke exhaust powervalve increases backpressure, depending on engine configuration this may be to reduce inlet charge flowing out of the cylinder on engines with large valve overlap (both inlet and exhaust valves open). This is just an opinion, im not an expert on the subject. But i am awesome.

Most intake valves are made of the same material as the exhaust. They are heat resistant treated high carbon steel, as are the valve seats. The exhaust valve is usually larger in diameter to aid in scavenging of the spent hot exhaust gas. Some more expensive engines have sodium (Na) filled exhaust valves to aid heat transfer to the valve seat to help cool the valve.

EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) is usually located on the intake manifold. They must be taken off and the port cleaned underneath it. May have to replace the valve as this carbon (usually high milage engines) is very difficult to get out.

Inlet & exhaust valves operate in different pressure conditions. Inlet valve in NA engines (Normally aspirated engines) have to work against pressure difference of say vacuum caused by piston going down & atmospheric 1 bar pressure, ie at pressure difference of 1 bar while exhaust valve has to work against pressure of multiple times of 1 bar. So exhaust at high pressure has a tendency of getting exhaled faster. During designing of valve size, amount of force required to operate the valves during operation is also considered so higher the area of exhaust valve higher is the force required to operate it. Thirdly Valve overlap timing requirement & the dynamics of the flow of air and physical sizes of valve opening affects each other or dependent of each other


Why is the exhaust valve smaller than the inlet valve?

Can the exhaust valve be too big? Indeed it can unless certain steps are taken to design other aspects of the engine to suit the valve size. The main adverse effect of large exhaust valves is in the overlap period at the end of the exhaust stroke when the exhaust valve is closing and the inlet one opening. While both valves are open at the same time some rather nasty things can happen. Fresh inlet charge can skip straight across to the open exhaust valve and disappear down the exhaust port leading to high hydrocarbon emissions and poor cylinder filling. Also the exhaust gasses can reverse flow at low engine speed and come back up the exhaust pipe and into the cylinder leading to contamination of the fresh inlet charge. To combat these effects you can reduce cam duration but this then adversely affects high rpm power. Alternatively you can increase the cam lobe centreline angle (LCA) so the exhaust cam closes earlier and the inlet one opens later. This reduces the 'valve overlap triangle' but again might not be what you want at higher rpm. What we can deduce from this is that large exhaust valves might have little adverse effect on low tuned or standard road engines with short duration cams but progressively worse effects on higher tuned engines. In fact it leads us to the inevitable conclusion that the higher we tune an engine the smaller the exhaust valve might need to be. This flies in the face of everything most people believe about tuning where bigger is always better.

You have too much compression?

Answer If I was having a problem with high cylinder pressure. I would start with checking for a restriction in the muffler. I would unscrew the muffler and take it off then recheck the compression. If it is still high then check to make sure that the exhaust valve is going up and down and that the exhaust valve port is not restricted. That is where I would start. Good luck.
