You have to install a device known as a "clapper" into your receptacle outlet. Plug your lamp into this device. It is sound activated. When you clap your hands the device senses the frequency of the clap and activated its internal circuitry. This closes a relay that supplies voltage to the lamp and it turns on.
They have adjustable sensitivity, i have mine on highest. There quite strange because talking will set them off but the equivalent music volume wont, and i have a 300w Sony 2.1 system. that said my computer isn't next to the subwoofer. I can't have my music at a volume they will react to because of my pathetic parents.

No, sound boards specifically control sound. Lighting consoles(aka light boards) control the lights. Most of these are more computer based than sound boards.
