Yes, they can live for several years. However they should be kept away from other cats that have not been vaccinated, as it spreads easily.

Can a dog catch luekemia from a sister dog?

In cats, the Feline Leukemia virus is a highly contagious to other cats who share food bowls and litter pans. Dog Leukemia is not contagious to other dogs. Feline Leukemia is caused by a virus. In dogs, Leukemia is a cancer of the blood. Like most other types of cancer, the causes of Leukemia are not well-understood, there aren't any measures to prevent Leukemia in your dog.

Cats with feline leukemia?

Yes, there is such a disease, and it's deadly. What do you want to know? All cats should be vaccinated for it, and any cat who roams outside is quite at risk. When I get a new cat I have it tested for Feline Leukemia before I even bring it home because it can easily spread and I have a cat that cannot be vaccinated due to a bad reaction. Take this disease very seriously.

What does the medical abbreviation FeLV mean?

Does Sparta from the mean kitty videos on you-tube really have leukemia?

Edit - leukemia in cats is NOT the same as leukemia in humans. It is NOT cancer NOR is it a death sentence. I had a FeLV (feline leukemia virus) cat and a FiV cat (feline AIDS) and both cats lived to be 20 and 22, respectively. Yes, he really does. Leukemia in cats is not an automatic death sentence, he has probably got a 50% chance of surviving at least three years. A few cats are carriers who never get sick at all. It's a fairly common, easily-spread disease in cats. There are treatments but no cure, but there is an effective vaccine. Good luck Sparta, we love you.

What are common cat disases that a cat can get?

Some well-known diseases in cats are Feline enteritis (Panleucopaenia), Cat flu, Feline leukemia virus and Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). Domestic cats should be vaccinated against the first three. The risk of FIV infection can be reduced by neutering, as this reduces fighting behaviours- FIV is transmitted by bodily fluids such as blood and saliva, mainly through bites.

What if your cats keep miscarrying what could it be?

It could be from being infected with a very deadly virus called Feline Leukemia. It is also very contagious, is carried in the saliva so cats pass it on by grooming each other or from fleas hopping from infected cat to cat. I would take at least one of the cats (best to take them all in) into your Veterinarian and have it tested for Felv. You really should spay all of your cats (if they are negative for the Feline Leukemia). Find a low cost spay and neuter clinic. We don't need anymore unwanted kittens. Too many cats out there that are homeless. Please vaccinate your cats in the future against Feline Leukemia and the other viruses.

What are some of the symptoms of feline Leukemia?

Can a cat catch nasal lymphoma from another cat?

Feline leukemia is a very contagious viral disease of cats. It is not related to the leukemia that people get, which is a type of cancer. Instead, it is an immune disease similar to human AIDS. The cats pass it to each other by body fluid, so if they eat and drink from the same container, they can catch the disease. Feline leukemia is fatal, and has no cure.
