A laptop keyboard would not work on a desktop because the connectors would not match up. Unless its a wireless keyboard that can connect thru bluetooth, the laptop keyboard would not work on a desktop.

Most don't need a driver to use, if it subscribes to the Plug-N-Play (PnP) rules it should just work. If not then you will have to go to the Manufacturers support site and see if there are any Mac drivers.
If a window comes up to press certain keys when you first plug it in then it is installing basic keyboard functions in order to use it and may not have all the features available to use, like the Function keys, Sound level keys, etc.
