Approximately 10% of people with penicillin Allergies also react to cefdinir. Broad spectrum antibiotics should only be taken under strict medical supervision; consult with your doctor to determine if this treatment is appropriate for you.

There is a significant risk that taking this medication could be life threatening for people with penicillin or other antibiotic allergies.

Usually yes.

Cehalexin is in the class of cephalosporins which are related to penicillin. About 10% of penicillin allergic patients will also react to cephalosporins so if the reaction to penicillin was mild (like a rash) and there is a good reason to use the cephalexin rather than other antibiotics then it is worth the risk.

If the reaction to penicillin was severe (like trouble breathing) or if there are other antibiotics that would work just as well then it is probably best to try something else.

Cefpodoxime is a cephalosporin type antibiotic, not a penicillin itself. Though there is a slight possibility of cross-reactivity, in actual practice the cephalosporin cans still be safely given unless the reaction to the penicillin was severe, as laryngospasm.

It is thought that anywhere from 10-20% of those persons who are allergic to penicillins will also react to the related cephalosporins, which includes cefalexin. This would not be the best antibiotic choice but depending on your doctors advice cound be given if closely monitored.

This is a very difficult question to answer. Ceftin is a cephalosporin-type antibiotic which has a similar chemical structure to penicillin. Patients with severe reactions to penicillin (anaphylaxis, facial swelling, others) are usually not given Ceftin except under medical supervision such as in the hospital. Patients with more mild reactions (faint rash, others) may be given Ceftin. Patients should discuss their allergy history, diagnosis, and treatment options with their doctor or pharmacist.
