Yes, the copper IUD (intrauterine device), brand-named Paragard in the US, can cause irregular periods, heavier periods and increased cramps. These side effects are more common in the first six months after the IUD is inserted. The Mirena IUD, which contains levonorgestrel, may cause irregular periods in the first months of use, but over time you can expect fewer periods and less bleeding.
Allergy to copper or Wilson's disease are contraindications to the copper IUD that don't apply to the levonorgestrel IUD. In addition, severe anemia is a contraindication for the copper IUD, but may be an indication for the levonorgestrel IUD, particularly if the anemia is exacerbated by heavy periods.
The Mirena can cause periods to stop, it releases a low level of synthetic progesterone. A copper IUD may cause periods to stop, but doesn't generally have this effect soon after placement. Depending on the type of IUD and the length of time it has been in place - you may want to check in with the doctor who placed it to see if you need a pregnancy test. Generally if an IUD is going to fail it does so in the first 3 months.
If you have occasional heavy spotting between periods it is something to discuss with your doctor but may not be serious. If this just started and continues for more than two months, definitely see your doctor as the IUD may be becoming implanted and cause serious injury.
Ask a doctor for general advice about heavy periods. For some people, heavy period is normal while others may be caused by an imbalance of estrogen and progesterone. This can be easily corrected by going on a birth control pill or putting in an IUD.
I am not sure but this just happened to me. I have had an IUD (Mirena) for 4 years and had not been having any periods. Recently, I lost almost 40 lbs and now I am having a regular period.
For 9yrs, copper IUD has protected me against pregnancy. I had sharp pain for the first few days after insertion, then after it got better. I had heavy periods accompanied with cramps. But it was highly effective as a contraceptive, though I did develop endometriosis and had it operated through laproscopy.
There is nothing in the IUD that will stop you from ovulating and having a menstrual period.
Leaving the copper IUD in longer than you are meant to is not dangerous and will not cause illness.
I HAD AN IUD AS WELL & I HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN TO ME! THEN I STARTED GETTING PERIODS EVERY TWO WEEKS. IT DROVE ME AND MY HUSBAND NUTS! AND DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED W/ THE CRAMPS. I WENT TO THE DOCTOR & THEY CHECKED AND SAID THE IUD WAS IRITATING MY UTERUS. NEVERTHELEES I GOT IT PULLED OUT & AM NOW ON THE NUVARING :)
The IUD will not cause abdominal tightness. The IUD is in the uterus, which is behind the pubic bone; it is not in the abdomen.
If you're using a hormonal IUD then yes, it can cause irregular bleeds. As hormonal birth control stops your menstrual cycles in order to stop ovulation it can stop menstruation, instead you can experience withdrawal bleeds and it is normal for these to be a little irregular.
