Perhaps it would be possible to replace an alkaline battery with a lead acid battery of the same voltage and current capacity. BUT the construction, size, and chemistry of the two types are totally different.

However amazingly, a lead acid battery can be emptied of acid, neutralised with something like sodium bicarbonate and then filled with a solution of distilled water and sodium aluminium sulphate. This (astoundlingly I think) can work even better than conventional acid. I am not sure of the chemistry going on when this is done, but should you be interested, googling for somethnig like : lead acid sodium aluminium sulphate - ought to yield results for further study. Antacids work against acids. If you were to add an acid to an acid you would just make more acid. They are therefore alkaline.

A lead acid battery works by using different positive and negative plates with grids that sit together in electrolytes produced by diluted sulfuric acid. This converts the electric energy into potential chemical energy, and then back again.A 12 voltlead acid battery is actually made up of six identical 2 volt cells. Each cell contains lead plates of different compositions sitting in dilute sulphuric acid. Lead dioxide plates (linked to the positive terminal of the battery) react with the acid to form lead sulphate giving up electrons (leaving the plate positive). The pure lead plates (linked to the negative terminal of the battery) react with the sulphate ions to also form lead sulphate. The pure lead plates therefore supply two positive charges and so are left negative. The passage of electons from the lead oxide plates to the pure lead plates is the current of electricity generated by the cell which can be used.
It really depends on how the battery is damaged. Generally, you cannot use a damaged battery for the following reason: Batteries contain lead and liquid acid. If the battery case is damaged, acid will spill from the affected cells of the battery and those cells will not function. Since the cells of a lead acid battery are connected in series, failure of any one cell means failure of the entire battery. If the damage is limited to the battery posts, the battery can sometimes be made to work by various means of tightening the cable clamps to the posts. This is a temporary fix that can be used in a pinch and it should be repaired properly as soon as possible.

Rechargeable wet lead acid batteries use lead plates, lead oxide plate on positive electrode and an electrolyte solution of dilute sulphuric acid. They store energy in chemical form and it is converted to electricity. When a load is connected between the positive and negative terminals a chemical reaction causes electricity to flow through the load. Lead oxide changes to lead sulphate in the chemical reaction using sulphuric acid that releases electricity. Increasing amount of lead sulphate and reduced amount of sulphuric acid lead to dropping of current flow and this show the battery is discharged. By applying an external current to the terminals, this chemical reaction is reversed during a process known as charging.
