All drugs, including alcohol, that depress the nervous system can exaggerate depression, as can the confusion and chaos surrounding drug use. Whether they actually cause it depends on the individual's brain chemistry and the drug in question.
The first step in treating depression or any other emotional or mental disorder is to get the person off all drugs if possible. Otherwise it is impossible to judge the degree of the problem, or the effects of medications that might counteract it.
