Can power be taken from a socket for a light?

Yes, a light bulb does precisely this.

Also, at one time you could purchase a little device that looked like the bottom part of a light bulb with an electrical socket in the other end so you could screw it into a light socket and then plug some other kind of device into it. I don't know if these are still made or not.

No. I am assuming that you first replaced the bulb? If you did replace the bulb, then I would check to see if you are getting power to the bulb socket. If no power is getting to the socket, you then need to find the break in the electric lines going to the socket.

hi my name is josh i had the same problem check the terminals in the light socket they could be corroded that was my problem.... With a volt meter check to see if you have power to that socket. Check at the wire not the socket. If you find you have power, either the socket is corroded or broken. Also check the ground connection at that socket.

Try replacing that. check power at the brake switch like the other person said, if there is power there then check for power at the bulb socket.
