Its' probable that schizophrenia of itself, only that, is not a cause of depressed emotions. Most of the depression is caused by stigma (others hating, and laughing at and making jokes about the schizophrenia sufferers that they don't even know, only hated because of the disease), and that schizophrenic patients are often cruelly treated by others: that's' depressing.
Giving the patients tender loving care and proving they are worthwhile regardless of the sickness, is part of a recovery. The recovery can take a long time, even years.
A multi-disciplinary approach will help, such as: also, see an Osteopath since often the real cause of the problem is a back injury, an injury to the nervous system, or the neck or spine, or the head. Often that's' accompanied by amnesia. Often, these people are found by others, collapsed on a roadside (may have tripped over and hurt themselves), or uncharacteristically found naked (having been attacked by stupid ones and hit over the head or spine since the attackers are merciless and want to kill their victim), other causes too.
If a person takes mind-altering drugs like marijuana, that can cause mental problems.
If a person is too emotionally numbed, that can cause mental problems e.g. watching the news and suddenly a newsflash comes on the screen with a real-life showing and broadcasting of a new atomic bomb attack: that's' the main problem of the children of today, they could not help but hear about that in the Middle East.
In any case, try Bach Flower Therapies, research them and buy some, they are wonderful emotional/mental healers of anyone.
Give them tender loving care. Don't nag, boss or bully the patients of any sickness. Don't just talk: really listen. And realise neither patients nor the staff nor the family, nor I, are perfect... YET!
That's there opinion, this is mine: schizophrenia often leads to depression, and not because of others opinions of their condition, but because of the nature of the disease, which tends to degrade its victims severely. The voices they hear usually tell them they arent good enough, no one could ever love them etc. if they are schizophrenics that have tendencies toward hallucinations, they are usually disturbing as well. so yes, it can lead to depression.
Depression is often a by-product of schizophrenia, but it is not thought to be causative.
Certainly can.
