Smoke (the part you can see) consists of "particulates" which are tiny particles from the thing which is burning or smoldering which are released into the air when it is on fire or has enough heat to cause smoldering. The particulates will settle, which is why the smoke will "disappear" in a relatively short time. It would make an interesting display for a relatively short time.
