Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, has returned to Denmark from University to find that his father has been murdered and that his uncle Claudius has married his mother and become king. The Ghost of Hamlet's father swears Hamlet to revenge his death on uncle Claudius, who murdered him. Hamlet pretends to be crazy while gathering information, tests Claudius with a play, decides not to murder him while praying, and, while giving his mother a tongue-lashing, thinks he hears Claudius behind a curtain and kills him. Unfortunately it's not Claudius but rather his chief counsellor Polonius, who happens to be the father of Hamlet's girlfriend Ophelia. Polonius's death causes Claudius to send Hamlet out of the country, Ophelia to go insane and her brother Laertes to come back to Denmark vowing revenge. Hamlet returns in time to see Ophelia's funeral. Laertes and Claudius try to trap Hamlet in a booby-trapped Fencing match, but the trap goes wrong, and kills not only Hamlet but also Laertes and Hamlet's mother. Before his death, Hamlet manages to kill Claudius. The play ends with dead bodies everywhere.

Hamlet is a world famous tragedy written by William Shakespeare. Basically, the story starts with Hamlet grieving for his dead father, yet everyone else is happy because his mother just married his uncle who is now king. Hamlet's father's ghost comes back and tells Hamlet that his uncle poisoned him to become king. Hamlet is unsure so he pretends to be mad to discover the truth about his father's death. Hamlet also has actors perform a play where someone gets murdered in the same way the ghost said he died. During the play Hamlet's uncle runs out; this proves his guilt. So Hamlet wants to kill him. First he goes to his mother basically saying "how could you marry him? did you know?" then there is a rustling behind the curtain. Hamlet stabs it convinced it's his Uncle but he just killed his girlfriend's father. His Uncle says that Hamlet has gone mad and sends him away. On Hamlet's way he is saved and comes back to find that his girlfriend in depression for her father's death killed herself. Her brother is angry and together with the king gets Hamlet to fight a fencing match with him. Hamlet's uncle convinces Hamlet's girlfriend's brother to poison the tip of the sword and to poison Hamlet's drink. When the fencing match is going on Hamlet's mum accidentally drank from Hamlet's cup, the fighters switch swords and both Hamlet and his opponent are poisoned with battle cuts, and with Hamlet's last breath he kills his uncle. Hamlet dies in his best friend's arms.

Here's a really short version of Hamlet. Hamlet is the nephew of the King, Claudius, who has married Hamlet's recently widowed mother, Gertrude. Claudius's Prime Minister is Polonius who has a daughter Ophelia and a son Laertes.

Enter Hamlet and the Ghost of his father

Ghost: Revenge my most foul and unnatural murder.

Hamlet: O my prophetic soul! Mine uncle!

Exit Ghost

Hamlet: The spirit that I have seen may be a devil. The play's the thing wherein I'll catch the conscience of the king!

Enter Claudius, Gertrude, Ophelia and some players. Polonius hides in a curtain. The players enact a murder and Claudius runs off screaming.

Hamlet: I'll take the ghost's word for a thousand pound.

Hamlet sees Polonius moving the curtain

Hamlet: How now, a rat?

Hamlet stabs Polonius then drags him off. Ophelia goes crazy and starts handing flowers around.

Ophelia: There's rosemary, that's for remembrance.

Enter Laertes with Claudius. Ophelia toddles off and drowns offstage.

Laertes: Where's my father?

Claudius: Hamlet comes back. What would you undertake to show yourself your father's son?

Laertes: To cut his throat in the church.

Enter Hamlet. He and Laertes fight. Both are mortally wounded. Gertrude drinks a cup of wine that is nearby and collapses.

Gertrude: The drink! The drink! I am poisoned!

She dies. Hamlet stabs Claudius and poisons him with the drink. Claudius dies

Hamlet: The rest is silence. He dies

Horatio and other guards witness the ghost of their recently deceased king. Horatio quickly reports the viewing to the king's only son, Hamlet. Hamlet decides to attempt to communicate with the ghost, and, against friendly advice, follows the ghost when beckoned. The ghost of the king reveals to Hamlet the secrets of a well planned murder, one already committed, the murder of the king. Hamlet is infuriated, and is convinced to attempt revenge.

Polonius, father of Laertes and Ophelia, Hamlet's only love, is an advisor to the new king. Hamlet begins to act strangely, and when Ophelia tells Polonius of Hamlet's new personality, Polonius decides to investigate with consent of the king. The king also summons two of Hamlet's friends from college, Rosencratz and Guildenstern. The pair is convinced by the current king to spy on Hamlet and attempt to discover the reason behind his awkward actions. Hamlet, with help from traveling players, writes a play identical to the murder plot, to be played for the murderer and those surrounding him.

The king and his trio of curious followers continue to intently spy on Hamlet, particularly when he is with Ophelia. The play, "The Mousetrap," is acted out in front of the king. When he notices the similarity of the plot of the play to his murder, he storms out of the room. The queen, Gertrude, former wife of the murdered, current wife of the murderer, agrees to send for Hamlet with the goal of making him open up about his feelings while Polonius hides in the room. Hamlet, before going to his mother's room, goes to the king's quarters with plans to murder him, but decides to wait because the king is praying. He reports to the queen's room, discovers the eavesdropper, and, thinking it is the king, stabs and murders Polonius. Hamlet, unsuccessfully, tries to convince his mother that the current king is mad.

The king orders Rosencratz and Guildenstern to take Hamlet to England with a letter requesting that the English monarchy put him to death. Hamlet discovers the letter, writes one that would put his escorts to death, and escapes. He returns to his homeland and stumbles upon the funeral of Ophelia, who apparently committed suicide when she learned of her father's death. When the king and Laertes, intent on avenging the death of his father and sister, learn of Hamlet's return, they plot to kill him in a duel with various means of poison.

Laertes and Hamlet have a short fight in the uncovered grave of Ophelia, before the burial, and agree on a duel, to simply test the skill of the two. One of the attempts to kill Hamlet, a poisoned drink, kills Gertrude when she makes a toast using that cup, killing herself. In the duel, Laertes uses a sword with a poisoned tip. He manages to stab Hamlet. Before Hamlet dies, he is able to gain control of Laertes sword and stab him with it. Hamlet then wounds the king with the sword and forces him to finish the poisoned drink. Hamlet tells Fortinbras, a traveling prince, that he will be the next king of Denmark. Hamlet dies.

Hamlet, son of the king of Denmark, returns to attend his father's funeral to find that his uncle has married his mother and declared himself king. His father's ghost reveals that the uncle, now King Claudius, murdered him and charges Hamlet to revenge the murder. Hamlet decides to pretend to be crazy while finding out if the Ghost was telling the truth, while the King gets everyone close to Hamlet to spy on him. Hamlet determines by means of a play that Claudius is guilty, but while having an argument with his mother, he hears the spy Claudius has planted and kills him. It turns out to be Polonius, the king's advisor and Hamlet's girlfriend Ophelia's father. The King sends Hamlet to England with secret instructions that Hamlet should be put to death; Hamlet luckily escapes that trap. The King sets a further one for him--a fencing match where his opponent (Polonius's son Laertes, who is mad for revenge) will have an unbuttoned and poisoned sword, and his wine cup will be poisoned. Unfortunately although Hamlet gets cut with the poisoned sword, so does Laertes, and his mother drinks the poisoned cup of wine. Realizing that this is his last chance to do so, Hamlet kills his stepfather then dies. Oh, did I mention that his girlfriend went crazy and drowned herself?

Why is Hamlet suicidal?

Hamlet is suicidal because his father, who was very dear to him, had just been murdered by Hamlet's uncle, Claudius. Within two short months of his father's murder, Hamlet's mother, Gertrude then married that very same Claudius.
