yes they could play many titles and they are known because they have 4 USB ports. If they do not have 4 USB ports and the card reader they can not play the PS2 games except the redesigned games sold for the PS3 through the PlayStation Store. Europe and later first PS3 models have less playable titles for PS2 games because they switched to a partial software based emulation before they completely discontinued the backward compatible feature.
Other factors including age and overheating make purchase of the 2006 and 2007 PS3 models a risky choice. There are even temporary fixes that can allow the early PS3 models to be sold when it will soon break again.
If your PS3 has already had the YLOD, then you can reflow your motherboard every few months to keep it working (but it is not a permanent fix as the YLOD usually comes back).
