A pool with too low of a pH will have corrosive water. It will start to wear out pool linings, fade swimsuits, and cause uncomfortable effects for swimmers. A pool with too high of a pH will have issues with buildup and scaling on the lining. The water will also be very cloudy. The best pH for a pool is slightly basic at around 7.2-7.4.

PH will increase with rain water or debris such as leaves that are blown into the pool during a storm. Due to the increased PH level, combined with depleted chlorine sanitizer levels, this generally leads to quick algae growth, even in winter when the water is colder.

Several steps will help lower the PH and clear the algae.

1.) Backwash filter, or perform a more through filter cleaning procedure if pressure is high and return water flow is weak.

2) Add some liquid chlorine to your chlorine or salt pool, brush the surface thoroughly and run the pump and filter on high for 8-12 hours (or run the salt system at 100% to increase chlorine production in place of liquid chlorine.)

3.) Several hours after adding chlorine, turn off the pump and add muriatic acid to several areas at the deep end of pool (no more than 1 quart per 25,000 gal pool per day.) Keep the pump off for a couple hours when adding acid in order to avoid reaction with metal pipes or copper heater core and potential surface metal-staining. Very important to immediately mix the acid thoroughly in the pool with a brush or net to avoid pool surface etching and permanent damage. Since muriatic acid is heavier than water it will sink to the bottom before fully dissolving - so be sure to mix and brush the water at the bottom of the pool and sweep away from corners and steps where it likes to settle also.

4.) Resume running the pump and filter again and backwash as necessary when water flow decreases and filter pressure increases.

5.) After 24-48 hours, vacuum the algae from the pool bottom or run an automatic pool cleaner.

6.) Add muriatic acid as necessary for the next few days (perhaps as long as a week) until PH level comes down to acceptable level. Add additional chlorine as necessary to maintain correct level and to continue to kill remaining algae.

In Short: Get the chemicals right, brush, vacuum. and backwash/clean filter for proper circulation. The chlorine will kill the algae, the acid will decrease the pH to keep the algae from returning, and the brushing, vacuuming and backwashing will help clear up the water and pool bottom to remove the cloudy junk and get everything looking sweet again !

Well because rain is polluted water and the chlorine in the pool has a different pH level than the polluted water. Therefore, when it rains, the polluted water and the chlorine water combine and make a whole different solution or different pH level.

Humm, maybe not the pH but it will eliminate all the chlorine and plug up the filter.

That depends on which chlorine you use. Some have hi pH others have low pH. http://www.deh.enr.state.nc.us/ehs/chem.htm#chl

What are chlorine pills for?

Chlorine tabs are for use in a chlorinator - there's some that just float in the pool and some that are connected to the water line and so are "automatic". They are a slow delivery system to help maintain the chlorine level in the water between 'shocking' the pool.

How much metal chemical needs to be in a pool?

First measure the ppm chlorine level that your pool is at. Next see what the ratio of chlorine is specified on the back of the chlorine package. For example to raise the pool 1 ppm add 13 ounces of chlorine to a 10,000 gal pool. Then set up a ratio of your pool size.

You put muriatic acid in your pool to lower the alkilinity however when you put the acid in the water it began to smoke what would cause this?

The answer is The reason it would smoke is that there is a reaction going on, which means that your water is Basic. maybe there is a lot of lime in your water. Nothing to worry about just put in enough acid and chlorine until the pool is at the right pH and chlorine level

How long will it take a chlorine level to drop from 10 ppm to 3 ppm in a 7000 gal pool?

A few days. You will probably be able to use the pool when the level gets to about 5.0 ppm 1) you should know the difference between residual chlorine and Free chlorine 2) Chlorine lost depend on size of you pool and temperature 3) circulation of water , temperature & size of pool will increase chlorine lost

How to eliminate milky pool water?

If the swimming pool water is milky, it is advisable to have the level of stabiliser (cyanuric acid) tested. A level of over 80ppm in the pool water is likely to lead to "chlorine lock" which can turn the water milky. If the problem is the stabiliser, you will need to drain some of the swimming pool water and refill with fresh water to bring the stabiliser level down to 30-50ppm. To avoid the level getting out of control, use a non-stabilised chlorine product such as calcium hypochlorite. http://www.havuz.org/pool_blog/2004_01_01_pool-problems.htm
