Famous authors often start Franchising their worlds to do collaborations with other authors with both authors listed together as co-authors. Clive Cussler David Weber, and Tom Clancy have all done this.
Some very good books have been written in exactly this way with two authors passing the manuscript back and forth as if it were a correspondence between two independent parties - for example the Kate and Cecelia books written collaboratively between Patricia Wrede and Caroline Stevermer.
