Oil does not evaporate noticeably. The previous answer, stating that all liquids contain water, was posted by a bigot; water is not oil soluble. All liquids evaporate to an extent- "warmer" particles move to the surface of a liquid and disperse into the air. Lets look at why. Remember that thermal energy is actually the average kinetic energy (energy of motion) of a substance. The more the particles move, the hotter a substance gets. Imagine that you are standing in a line with many people on either side of you, holding hands. You are all linked together by you hands, just as particles in any solid or liquid are held together closely by intermolecular attractions. Now imagine that all of you start jumping up and down, quite vigorously (representing kinetic energy and therefore thermal energy). What do you think happens to the group? People find it harder and harder to keep their hands together. Now imagine that everyone starts jumping even more quickly and vigorously. Your grip on your partners' hands starts to loosen, and eventually, they let go. To relate this example back to particles in a substance, when heat is added to a substance, the particles begin to move until they overcome their intermolecular attractions and break free. In their free state, these molecules are able to diffuse into the air as a gas. So why doesn't oil do this? Oil is lipid; cooking oil is a phospholipid derived from plants. It contains, in solution, small amounts oil soluble substances like some vitamins, odor particles, organic pigments, and other flavored substances. Phospholipids are large molecules. They consist of a head and a tail. In oils (not solid fats), the tails are kinked by double bonds, so that the molecules cannot line up and form a solid. This also hinders evaporation. The large molecules tangle up and hook together so that, in addition to intermolecular attractions, oil molecules are mechanically held tightly together. Like a hair ball, no matter how much kinetic energy you add, there is no efficient way to untangle the particles.

By comparison, water does not have this problem because it is a small molecule.

In short, oils do not evaporate readily, because they are large molecules and are tangled together too tightly for easy separation while changing into the gaseous state.

Yes. Technically, all liquids have a vapor pressure., which means that the air above the liquid allows a certain amount of the liquid to turn into a gas.

If a liquid sits in the open air, it will evaporate until the vapor pressure is reached. This means that, given a long enough time and a big enough room, any liquid will eventually evaporate - including oil.

Depending on the type of oil, the vapor pressure of the oil is usually around 1 kPa which is 1/100th the pressure of the atmosphere.

Yes, all liquids can evaporate. Evaporation is just when a liquid molecule becomes a gas. It is simply a phase change in which all liquids can form. This is similar to all solids being able to melt and all gases being able to condense. It just takes more energy for some than others.

Yes because anything that can be a liquid be a gas and a solid so it can evaporate when it turns into a gas

What is the difference between essential oils and fragrance oils?

Essential oils [eo's] are the oils that are in the plant. There are oils in wood, oils in plants, oils in flowers, seeds, rinds, pulp. EO's are natural, from the plant. They are volatile oils, meaning they can evaporate quickly and are flammable. Eo's need to be kept cool, in a refrigerator is best, in the dark, as in amber glass and covered, as with a cap on the bottle. Fragrance oils [fo's] are made from solvents and chemicals. EVERY fragrance you can purchase that is made by a conglomerate is a fragrance based in chemicals. Eo's can't be put in candles because they will evaporate too quickly and especially when a fire is lit! All the plug in air fresheners, are all chemicals. The little trees and shoes and whatever people put in their cars, chemicals. There is no 'lily of the valley' in an eo. No henna, no rose of sharon, no apple, no apricot, you get the idea I hope. Essential oils have chemicals in them, however they are naturally occurring. Essential oils can affect a person's body due to the chemical composition. Creator made them to heal in spirit, soul and body, not only smell good. Inhaling eo's brings the molecules up into the body, thru the olfactory bulb that is in the nose. These molecules are healthy because they are from the plant. Chemical and solvents that make up fragrance oils also have molecules that can be inhaled and go into the body. They are not healthy. Darn near every company that sells essential oils has excellent oils. They wouldn't be able to stay in business if they didn't. Young living oils are no better or worse than oils that can be purchased from Amrita, or Blue Sage Naturals or any of the other companies that sell essential oils or use them in products or anointing oils. There is serious controversy in the eo world regarding this company's marketing and usage methods. To learn more purchase a book by Robert Tisserand, Maggie Tisserand, Valerie Worwood and others skilled in eo's. Do not purchase a book made by or marketing just one company. There are essential oil and aromatherapy groups on LinkedIn from which you can learn.
