NOTE: I am not affiliated with "Weight Watchers" but have gone to them to lose weight for several years (just to get a kick-start every so often.) I've been there and done that. Other than the fact your hormones have changed (are still changing) you treat your body with weight issues just as you would if you weren't in menopause. It's true that women carry a layer of fat under their skin (men don't) but you can lose that weight.

Go to "Weight Watchers" as it's more about learning to eat right than a diet (you can eat almost anything and it doesn't disrupt your life.) Other diets (such as fasting or grapefruit diets, etc. are dangerous to your health.) Diet Centers where you "buy the food" is extremely costly and not realistic. YOU should be learning how to read labels on the food you buy to see what the sugar, fat and salt content is (it's not hard.) This way you can lose weight and still eat the same things your husband or children eat and you're not cooking two different meals (it's good for your husband and kids as well.)

Diets should contain low in fats, salt and sugar. Olive oil is excellent to use while cooking stir fries, etc. Poultry, fish, red meats (don't have to have red meat if you don't want too) that are lean and a woman only requires 3 1/2 ounces of protein at each meal. Lots of veggies (raw or cooked) leafy greens such as fresh spinach (NOT BAGGED), Brussels sprouts, broccoli. Yogurt, (Soy is suppose to be good, but some people are allergic to it and some people don't care for it.) 1% - 2% milk (with vitamin C supplements for good bones) butter in minimal quantities is better for you than margarine (read what's in margarine even though these brands are low in saturated fats.) Eggs, and low-fat cheese. Lots of whole grains (oatmeal and apples or applesauce has been proven to lower cholesterol). Good juices to drink are Cranberry Juice or Pomegranate juice which is high in antitoxidents and good for your kidneys and liver while low in sugars. A MUST IS 8 - 8 ounce glasses of water a day (flushes out fat and toxins in the body and keeps the kidneys and liver flushed out.)

Women don't realize that we have a lot of yeast build-up in our bodies which makes us feel bloated, can cause yeast infections and make us fat! Back-off of yeast A LITTLE AT A TIME. Instead of eating breads or buns, cakes, cookies, etc., make your Sandwiches out of flat breads or have pita pockets, etc. Don't be afraid to "spice it up" instead of using too much salt or sugary things such as Ketchup (loaded with sugar.) Then introduce SOME yeast back into your body.

I AM REALLY RUSHED AND FIND IT HARD TO COME HOME AND MAKE A HEALTHY MEAL .... It isn't hard! When you make a stir-fry (lot of veggies) and bamboo shoots, and other oriental veggies (even canned) are good for you. You can make stir-fry with left-over chicken, beef, make it with prawns, shrimp. Make up enough for 2 - 3 meals and have one meal and freeze the other two (put your portion in a microwave dish or bag and freeze.) When you make a meal make it for two and freeze the second one. This cuts down on your time. Cottage cheese is good with fresh or tinned fruit (in own juices) over top, or add dill weed, chives on top. That's a quick lunch. Make healthy salads ... vegetable salads, chicken salads, seafood salads. Once you get into the swing of things you won't find it so difficult. I lost 45 lbs. and I do slip occasionally, but it doesn't take me long to get back into the swing of things.

HOW MUCH EXERCISE? You can go to a gym and work-out. Should be no less than 3 times per week. I do some weight training to tone muscles up because I'm in my 60s and of course we can lose muscle tone quickly. I go for fast walks every single day (rain or shine) with my dogs by the river for at least an hour. If I can't do the hour I will exercise at home to make up the 1/2 hour. You can go to a pool and swim, jog or fast-walk with a friend just around your neighbourhood (DON'T WEAR HEAD PHONES TO LISTEN TO MUSIC OR TALK TO SOMEONE ON YOUR CELL when jogging! You must be aware of who is around you at all times. If possible go with a friend or take your dog.

I know it sounds over-whelming, but honestly, once you learn to read labels and realize .... low fat, sugar, salt and yeast, lots of fresh fruit, veggies, 3 1/2 ounces of protein at each meal, 8 - 8 ounce glasses of water (I prefer bottled water) and that exercise you're on your way. You'll be surprised how quickly the weight melts off.

I do work from home on my computer and that's simply asking for a "big spread of the butt" so I stop, either go jogging or take my dogs for a fast walk by the river. It's invigorating, makes those chemicals in the brain start to work, you feel better, more energy and you sleep better. When people realize they have a weight problem and make an effort to do something about it and begin to see results they feel so much better about themselves. "Weight Watchers" is a wonderful way to learn to eat better because you can eat everything and still have fun with friends.

WHAT DO I DO WHEN I GO OUT SOCIALIZING: You can prep yourself during the day. Have your breakfast, perhaps cottage cheese with fruit on it for lunch and if you're going for dinner, you've just saved up some free calories. You can also do what I do ... "have a piggy night" on the weekend. Rewarding yourself is no crime. Don't over-do it, but don't be afraid to go out with friends and have a few drinks and some spicy chicken wings, or that too rich dinner. Then pick up the pace from then on and stick to your diet.

HOW CAN I KEEP "ME" GOING ON A DIET? If you stick to what I've just told you then in a month I want you to take your jeans or slacks and put them up to you. You'll be amazed just how much you have lost. Keep those jeans or slacks out so when you feel you're falling behind on your good eating habits just take a look at what you've achieved by holding those pants up to you. It won't take long before your friends and family notice either. When in doubt and if you don't think 1 lb. is a lot of weight to lose then just hold up a pound of butter and that's how much fat you've lost! Be warned that you will "plateau" and stay at a certain weight for possibly a month, but don't give up and keep at it. It's just the bodies way of regulating itself. You'll start to lose the rest of the weight.

DO MEDICATIONS PUT WEIGHT ON ME? You bet! Antidepressants (SSRIs) can put weight on you as can some other medications for a health disorder one may have, but the "Weight Watchers" diet will take care of this and drinking that water! If you can try going to a Homeopathic doctor to get through your menopause and try staying away from Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). It's not good for you! Short-term through rough spots (if you must) is OK, but long-term is not a good idea. HRT can cause heart attacks in women, breast cancer and blood clots. I didn't take it and did fine. I was a little cranky but exercised to get rid of it and ate right.

WHAT ABOUT THE HOT FLASHES? Even men go through "Andropause" and can have hot flashes. If you are going to have caffeine, alcohol, pop, chocolate then be prepared for a possible hot flash (it won't kill you!) Try cutting down on your caffeine (but not all at once because it can cause headaches.) When sleeping have a medium sized fan just blowing over top of you (not on you) so you feel a breeze. You will sleep much better! When jogging take water with you and you can also use a plain spray bottle with water and spray your face and arms to cool you down. If you are out and have a hot flash go into a washroom and soak a paper towel under the cold water and place it behind your neck or run the undersides of your wrists under cold water. Doesn't take long to get over the hot flash.

Yes. Weight gain can be one of the symptoms of menopause. There are other symptoms too like hot flashes, mood swings and night sweats. But weight gain is commonly noticed because we are having a change of shapes sometimes in our upper abdomen, hips and thighs. Why? Because women in menopausal period do less exercises and sometimes their diet isn't just right. We should always eat healthy foods, and herbal products are also recommended.

Weight loss during menopause can be difficult but there are some things that you can do. The best thing that you can do is to increase the amount of time each day that you exercise. Studies have shown that women who exercise 1 hour a day during menopause keep weight off.

Diet and exercise. Often a weight gain around the middle is more a matter of weak abdominal muscles, especially if you are slim everywhere else.

Menopause does not cause weight gain. Therefore, menopausal women would lose weight the same as non-menopausal women: through lowering caloric intake.

What is the average weight gain from menopause?

The average weight gain during menopause varies widely and depends on multiple factors. However, some generalizations can be made: General Range: Most women gain 5-8% of their baseline body weight during the first two years of menopause. This translates to roughly 4-6 pounds for someone weighing 160 pounds. Individual Variance: The actual weight gain can be far less or significantly more than this average. Factors influencing this include: Pre-menopause weight: Women with higher BMIs tend to gain more weight during menopause. Lifestyle choices: Diet, exercise, and overall health habits significantly impact weight gain. Genetics: Some women are genetically predisposed to weight gain, regardless of menopause. Hormonal changes: The specific hormonal fluctuations during menopause can also play a role.
