No; it will wash out the essential oils in their fur and they will die.

You can spray them lightly with water it it is absolutely necessary to get something toxic out of their fur.

You should not bathe your hamsters because they have special chemicals on their fur and if you wash them off they can catch a cold because they will get cold. you should only bathe them if they have harsh toxic stuff on their fur like paint if so then take a couple cotton swabs wet them a little bit and stroke their fur but you should never use soap.

Hamsters do clean themselves. They clean themselves very often but you can give them a dust bath but DO NOT give tham a bath with water and soap.

not how we get baths. just remember this. get warm water a rag and bowl. dab the rag in the bowl and then ring it out getting most of the water off the rag. then gently dab the hamster. Joe J.

Hamsters - To Bathe or Not to Bathe....Yes, but not often. Hamsters are obsessive groomers and frequent soap and water baths will dry their skin. Pet stores sell bath powder, but a better (because you can use it for a multitude of needs from foot fungus to a very safe and odorless insecticide) and much less expensive alternative is Amorphous Diatomaceous Earth which can vary in price (but still costs less than the pet store powder - the cheapest I've found is about $15 for a huge but light 5 gallon container). Place enough of the powder in a small bowl (pet stores also carry cute, specially made ceramic bathers) for your hamster to be able to roll around in (like a pig in mud). You can keep it in the cage (if there is ample room) or make a routine of it. Your pet will decline if it isn't time yet. Most seem to enjoy it. But a water bath in the sink (make sure there are no holes or drains open that they can fit through) or a large bowl or basin with mild soap (pet store variety, baby shampoo, or your own if it's mild) is nice every so often, but no more than once a month unless Hammy gets into something icky. Be careful of the temperature and rinse well. I wrap mine in several soft paper towels and cuddle them until they're dry. Although they don't love it, they handle the bath quite well, and are surprisingly calm afterward. Good luck!

P.S. Never bathe a nursing mom! But, if you know she's expecting, it's not a bad idea to give her a gentle bath before the birth and freshen her cage. But don't disturb all the nesting she's done in preparation, and consider adding another cage (because they'll be needing the extra room temporarily - especially if you remove the higher attachments, which babies can fall out of if that's where she decides to keep them).

Emma: No!, I just called a pet store they said no, but maybe every year. Hamsters clean themselves so there not dirty (think of cats) And A heads up if hamsters are a lot of money, use a friends ( like I did!)
Hamsters can clean themselves. If they have gotten into something they shouldn't have, you can take a damp cloth and wipe it off. Then wrap them in a dry towel until completely dry. NEVER give a hamster a bath. It can lower the hamsters body temperature, and strip the natural oils that keep their fur and skin healthy. Never apply any shampoo or oils, because then they will ingest anything they groom off after. This can harm them.

not regular sand. Go to your local pet store they should have something called "Chinchilla Sand" make sure its SAND not DUST!

Dust can harm your hamster. Put the sand in a tiny bowl and let it roll around a bit. It doesnt really get rid of its odor though. You can also get a hamster shampoo that's used for small pets just make sure you was him and quickly blow dry him completely dry or else they could get sick.

Bathing removes natural and essential oils from the hamster's coat, which can cause the hamster to catch a chill and die.

Bathing should only be done in exceptional circumstances, like if your hamster has paint, varnish or anything toxic on its coat that may harm it if it licks itself or ingests it. The hamster will clean itself if it is dirty and the substance is not toxic. Chinchilla sand will keep the coat clean and grease free. Normally there should be no need to bathe your hamster with water at all during the course of its life.

If your hamster does get toxic or harmful substances on its coat, then you must bathe it unless you are able to cut it out of the coat, e.g. if there is gum or something sticky, that can usually be cut out of the coat.

  1. Get a bowl containing 2 inches of warm water. Test the temperature with your elbow to make sure it is not too hot or too cold.
  2. Wet the hamster and gently rub it into the dirty area to cleanse it. Take extreme care not to let any water get near the nose, mouth, ears or eyes.
  3. If your hamster has something particularly sticky that's can't be cut out in its fur, then you can use shampoo, but it must be baby shampoo. Again, make sure not to get it near the hamster's face.
  4. Carefully rinse out the shampoo, and place the hamster on a towel.
  5. Dry very carefully; be careful of the hamster's legs.
  6. Then, get a hairdryer and put it on its lowest setting. Hold it very far from the hamster and always keep your hand between the dryer and the hamster to avoid burning the skin.
  7. Wash your hamster on a warm day if possible to lessen chances of getting a chill.
  8. Make sure the fur is completely dry before returning the hamster to its cage or the shavings will stick to the damp fur.

This is not a safe way to bathe a hamster. There are no safe ways to do it. So please do not wash your hamster if it smells or looks a bit grubby. Only if there is something toxic on the fur that cannot be cut off. This method carries the same risks as all others but this is the best way if you absolutely have to do it.

If your hamster smells bad, it may be sick and should be brought to the vet as soon as possible. To keep your hamster clean and healthy, make sure its living conditions are cleaned out regularly.

When you think that hamsters are starting to smell it's not the hamster it's the cage. You will need to clean your cage more often. If you are already cleaning your cage regularly then get some sanitary wipes and wipe down the whole cage. I hope this helped you

Its not a good idea to wash a hamster at any age. If you absolutely must you should not fully imerse it and towel dry it afterwards. I would certainly not wash a baby hamster.

You can't with water. However, you can buy bathing sand made for hamsters. it is their way of getting clean. They will roll around in the sand to clean themselves, it's entertaining too.

How do you give a hamster a bath if it has fleas?

A bath won't get rid of the fleas. You need to take it to the vets for a set of three injections to get rid of them. In British money that would cost about £21. They need to be done on three separate occasions. Its not the cheapest, but it really is the only way to properly get rid of them.
