It's possible, the fluid inside lubricates the bearing.
You'd have some steering issues, and your power steering pump would eventually burn out.
That means you have a leak. Eventually your power steering will fail (no longer have power assist) and your pump will burn up. You can put some power steering fluid plus stop leak (all in one) in it, but I would also recommend that you crawl under the car and look for the leak.
it can overheat and burn up
the power steering service port is not easily visible. it is located under / aft of the alternator. it has a black cap and on the cap it says atf. BMW does not use power steering fluid they use atf in place of power steering fluid. please do not attempt to service the power steering fluid while the engine is hot. you will burn yourself. access to the cap could also be frustrating. use dextron III fluid. if your power steering is making noise and difficult to turn the wheel there might be a leak if you have never done anything to the power steering component. this is a easy troubleshooting tip to see if you have a bad hose. check the ground where you park or put cardboard under your car to see if you have a leak.
power steering fluid is low, check for leak, add fluid, turn steering wheel all the way in BOTH directions, then recheck fluid level. Take care of this or you will burn up the pump
if it has no fluid in the PS pump u will burn it up very quickly. i don't see it as a good idea.
These GMs have a DUMB design, the power steering fluid res. is on the backside of the engine, follow the belt and feel between the engine and firewall and you will find it. It's best to do so when the engine is cool, as it's easy to burn yourself checking it when the engine is warm.
No, it will just be a little harder to turn. Once you hit 5 mph, you wont notice it that much Not true... If your car comes factory with power steering and it stops working, chances are your out of power steering fluid. In this case you can burn up your power steering pump causing particles of the burnt pump to enter your steering box and that would cause damage. It could just wear it out (i.e. causeing loose steering) or it could bind up (i.e. wont turn completely in one direction intermittenly. If you notice your steering getting harder to turn, I would recomend you checking your fluid and toping it off if necesary.
You drain and refill the power steering fluid by disconnecting the return line to the Power steering fluid reservoir and starting the engine and moving the wheel from lock to lock. After doing this (evacuating all of the PS flulid) you need to refill the reservoir and move the wheel from lock to lock to get the air out of the system. It requires a hand held vacuum pump on the reservoir to "suck" all of the air out of the system. It can burn up your PS pump if there is air in the system. A better way to do it is to take a turkey baster and suck as much fluid as you can out of the reservoir and replacing it with clean fluid. If you do this every oil change the fluid will be clear and clean within 4 changes.
if it doesnt idle what does it do..... it prob idils rough. change power steering pump and or rack and pinion steering assembly if ur rack is worn it will burn up pump
Look on the passenger side at the back of the engine comparment under two hoses. Plan on reaching down about 8 inches. Make sure you give you engine a chance to cool down or you will burn yourself.
Passenger side of the engine bay. Firewall side of the engine. Follow the heater core hoses down. The reservoir will be the first thing you feel. You can't see it, but it's there. Reach down that little space. DON"T BURN YOURSELF!!!!
