If you are on a leave from your employer you are not considered to be unemployed. To be eligible for benefits a person must be unemployed (separated from the employer). They must also be ABLE and AVAILABLE to seek and accept IMMEDIATE full time work. If you are on a medical leave you are still employed, you are probably not able to accept immediate work due to a medical condition, therefore not eligible.

Unemployment insurance is intended for people who lose their jobs. Many employers will hold jobs open during maternity leave - meaning you probably will be denied. If your employer does not hold your job open, then you would have a legitimate claim.

Short term disability insurance is intended to replace your income during maternity leave, not unemployment insurance.

The answer is - it depends.

If your employer offers maternity benefits you are one of the lucky few.

If you live in a state with mandated short term disability will are covered. Those states are CA, HI, NJ, NY, and RI.

If your employer offers short term disability insurance and you applied before getting pregnant, your maternity leave for normal labor and delivery will be covered.

Each state has its own criteria for determining eligibility regarding things like medical leave. Generally, you have to be able (among other things) to go to work, which you might not be. If your situation is work related, you might qualify for Workers Comp.
