A 220 volt appliance should not be plugged into a 110 outlet. At best, it won't work. At worst, it will break.

It is possible to run some appliances on 110 volt circuits by means of special adapters. However, this is only works well with devices that use little electricity. Anything larger than a coffeemaker should not be run this way. The adapters tend to overheat and may cause fires. They may also be illegal in your area or disallowed by fire codes.

Most larger appliances are dual voltage. This means they have the ability to run on either 100 or 220 and have a selector switch for this purpose somewhere in the vicinity of the power cord. This is true for most computers and office electronics. To be sure check the manual or ask the manufacturer.

If you really need to run a 220 volt appliance, check with an electrician, you may be able to get a 220 circuit installed in your house fairly easily. This would be the best and safest way.

This is more complicated to answer than the questioner may realize! * It may be asking about using an appliance made for use in the US, Canada or in Another Country which uses a similar 60 Hz household power system, which is actually to be used in one of those same countries:

"Does it matter if the voltage is slightly different?"

The answer to that is No.

* It may be asking about using an appliance made for use in Europe or in another country which uses a similar 50 Hz household power system, which is actually to be used in one of those same countries:

"Does it matter if the voltage is slightly different?"

The answer to that is also No.

If the question is asking about International Travel then the answer will be found by clicking on one of the Related Questions shown below which is relevant to the country of origin of the appliance and the destination country in which you want to use it.

Answer for USA, Canada and countries running a 60 Hz supply service.

Single phase appliance's do work on standard household electric. The North American supply system is 120/240 volts. 220 volts is in the same voltage range as 240 volts. Most high wattage appliances use 240 volts as a feeder voltage in homes.

Yes. Should do. There in the same voltage range.

Answer

'240 V' is a nominal voltage -i.e. it is the 'named' voltage of the supply, not its 'actual' voltage, which is allowed to vary up or down by a specified percentage. In the United States and Canada, this figure is 5%, which means that the actual voltage could be as low as 228 V.

The same goes for the appliance. It's nominalrated voltage of 220 V, will also be allowed to vary. Assuming that the allowed percentage is also 5%, then it should be able to operate up to 231 V.

As you can see, there's an overlap between the two voltages, so there should be absolutely no problem running a 220-V load at 240 V.

No. You can get single-phase off a 3-phase receptacle but you can't get 3-phase out of a single-phase receptacle.

In the USA, yes it is single phase, running 180 degrees apart. And just FYI single phase and split phase is the same thing. This can be confusing.
