If the question is, can I wire a switch to an existing light fixture (and I must assume that it's something like a pull-chain light fixture), the answer is yes.

If the question is, "how do I wire a switch to an existing light fixture that has no external switch", the answer is, "in series".

The attached web site gives simple instructions on how to wire a basic light switch to an existing light.

How do you add another porch light to an existing switch?

Piggyback off the box for the existing light. Run a wire from the existing junction box to a new junction box (which is placed wherever you want the new fixture). Then, in the existing box, connect the wire coming from the switch, the wire for the existing fixture, and the wire for the new fixture together using wire nuts. Wire up the new fixture, and presto, you have two fixtures on a switch where there was only one before.

How do you wire a 220 volts light?

The light is wired the same as any voltage fixture. Bring the source voltage to the fixture and connect it to the two fixture wires. If you want to control the off-on of the fixture take the source voltage to a switch first and then out of the switch to the light fixture.

How do you wire an additional light to another light with a switch?

In the wall switch box you should have a white and black pair from your source of power (120 volts). The other pair of black and white wires from the wall box should be going to the light fixture junction box. With the power off, connect the two white wires together with a wire nut. Connect the two bare copper ground wires together making sure that at least one of the ground wires goes under the green screw in the switch junction box. Turn the switch to the off position, no little indicator bump showing on the switch toggle lever. Now take the black incoming hot wire and put it under the top screw on the switch. Hot wires always go to the top of switches. Now put the black wire that is going to the light fixture under the bottom screw. Tighten both. Install the switch into the wall box with the switch handle in the down position. All switches when installed must be off in the down position. Install the switch plate cover.

What is a key less light fixture?

It just holds the bulb, does not have a switch in the fixture.

How do you wire an exhaust fan to an end of circuit switch?

Answer for USA, Canada and countries running a 60 Hertz supply service.I want to add an exhaust fan to the existing light switch, it's already on a 20 amp circuit, it's only got 1 light and 2 receptacles on it. However, I popped the cover off the switch today to find that the switch is not wired normally, with the 2 white leads tied together behind the switch, and the black leads going through the switch. Instead I have only 1 black lead, and 1 white lead in the box. The white then leads back to the black lead on the existing light. With just the two wires in the switch box, it means that the junction you will have to tie into is in the light fixture junction box. The usual wiring in this type of connection is, the circuit "hot" is connected to the white wire that goes down to the switch box and connects to the top of the switch. Code states that this wire should be identified as a "hot" conductor by having a black tape identifier on it. The voltage returns back to the fixture on the black wire from the bottom terminal on the switch. To tie a fan into this circuit it has to be paralleled to the light fixture at the light fixture junction box. Connect the fan feeder's white wire to the neutral (white wire) in the light fixture junction box. Connect the fan feeder's black wire to the black wire that returns from the switch and parallel it to the wire that is now connected to the light fixture. This will give you a connection that will turn on the light fixture and the new fan, from the same switch. Before you do any work yourself,on electrical circuits, equipment or appliances, always use a test meter to ensure the circuit is, in fact, de-energizedIF YOU ARE NOT REALLY SURE YOU CAN DO THIS JOBSAFELY AND COMPETENTLYREFER THIS WORK TO QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS.

How do you connect an ON-OFF switch to control the light?

To control a light with a switch, the switch has to be connected in series with the light fixture.

How do you hook up a light and switch from an existing light?

Add a light to switch from a different circuitI think here your concern is that you don't want change the performance of the circuit to which you add the light.so you have to use a relay or a solid state relay to the circuit and a separate power supply to the light in compliance with all the safety rules.

How do you wire in a pull chain switch in a bathroom light fixture?

If you are adding the pull chain to an existing fixture then the pull chain switch should have two wires. Wire nut either one to the hot wire coming in and the other to the black wire of the fixture.

How do you wire a pull switch on a hard wire ceiling light that has no switch?

Two options. Change the fixture to a keyed pull-chain, or add a pull-chain adapter to the existing fixture. Both available from Home Depot and others for about $3.

How do you hook up one light to one switch in a basement lighting system that has all 10 lights connected to one switch?

If you have good access to the wiring this is relatively easy to do. Each of the 10 lights is connected to another in parallel in a "daisy chain" fashion. Light 1 is connected to the switch, light 2 is connected to light 1, light 3 is connected to light 2 and so forth. Let's say it is light 5 that you wish to switch separately. You can first install the new switch by either adding a new box or modifying old switch box. There are two gang switches that will fit the form factor of a single switch. TURN OFF THE POWER TO SWITCH BOX. Using the same supply input at original switch, add a new black wire to the wire nut for input to original switch and connect this to the input of new switch. Then run a new wire to light 5 and connect black wire to the output of new switch. Connect all the white wires together in switch box and separately connect all bare wires together in switch box. Now at light 5 undo the black and white wire coming from the fixture, and reconnect the wire nuts so that there is a direct connection between light 4 and light 6. Do the same for the ground if present (bare wire). You now have the fixture wires hanging free. Now connect the black wire from new switch to the fixture black wire and white to white and you are done.

Can you change an electrical outlet into a switch for a light?

Sure. For a light you need a fixture to hold the light and the light itself. The light needs to be connected to a voltage supply which you can get from the outlet. In the outlet box you will have a black, white and bare ground wire. Essentially you connect the white and bare wires directly to the light and switch the black wire (hot) through a switch.

Do you need a separate switch for a sensor light if I am connecting it from an existing light outside?

If you are taking the power from the existing light outside you have to be aware that when that outside light is switched off then the sensor light will not work. Your best choice should be power the sensor light from an un-switched source. This could be an existing receptacle outlet in a nearby location. Check your sensor configuration to see if the device has the function to be locked on and off by interrupting the voltage supply to it. If it does then a switch in its circuit is mandatory to make this function work. If this function is not included in the device then just connect it as the instructions explain and the fixture will come on when it senses movement and go off after a timed interval.
