If you are driving, a solid white line means that you cannot legally change lanes, but that cars on the other side are going in the same direction as you are. These are commonly used in construction areas where the lanes shift and it would be dangerous for cars to make lane changes.

It is never legal no matter the color. (USA)

The gist of which is "A single SOLID white lane line indicates that crossing the line to change lanes is discouraged, for example when a separate turn lane is provided."

According to SC Highway Patrol, A solid single line should never be crossed. Only those solid lines that are accompanied with hash marks indicate a turn lane. Therefore, a single solid white line should not be crossed.

Rule 129

You MUST NOT cross or straddle double white lines in normal driving. Exceptions are: if it is safe to do so and you need to enter premises adjoining the carriageway or a side road. In addition, it is permissible to cross the line as necessary and provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle. Or to overtake a horse, pedal cycle or road maintenance vehicle, only if they are not travelling at speeds greater than 16 km/h (10 mph). You can also cross double white lines when ordered to do so by a policeman in uniform.

In MICHIGAN

(as quoted from: http://www.Michigan.gov/som/0,1607,7-192----S,00.html)

Solid white lines: Solid white lines mark the right edge

of the road. Often called fog lines, solid white lines help

you stay on the road at night or in bad weather. Passing

to the right of another vehicle by crossing a solid white

line that marks the right edge of the roadway is prohibited,

even if the shoulder is paved.

Solid white lines are also used to separate lanes of traffic

moving in the same direction. When solid white lines

separate lanes of traffic moving in the same direction,

crossing a solid white line is not recommended. These

white lines may designate sharp curves, freeway

acceleration and deceleration lanes, and other parts of

the road where lane changes are considered dangerous.

A double solid white line is used to show a travel path

where driving in the same direction is permitted on both

sides of the line, but crossing the line is prohibited.

yep, your not supposed to. In an intersection such as a stoplight it is illegal and you can get a ticket for illegal lane change.

There is nothing "not supposed to" about it.

Crossing a single white line between lanes traveling in the same direction

as your travel is discouraged but not illegal.

Furthermore, where have ever seen an intersection, with a traffic light,

or stop light for that matter, that has painted lines of any type going

across it?? I haven't but I could be mistaken. Please enlighten me if

you've ever seen this, and tell us exactly WHERE you've seen this!

you can cross them anytime you feel like going over them...however, legally, you can only cross them in case of an emergancy to get onto the shoulder, or while in a construcitn site only to avoid a collision. Other than that...if the line is solid, yellow or white, you are not suppose to cross it.

Is it legal to cross over a solid white line in Arizona?

It is legal. The white solid line in refrence I believe is a cautionary passing line. Meaning: have caution while crossing over to the next lane. This is also between the HOV lane and the regular traffic lanes on the freeways. However, it is illegal to cross double solid lines. This is not a passing nor crossing zone.
