Best Answer

You can drink food grade hydrogen peroxide. NOT the peroxide in the little brown bottle.

Food grade hydrogen peroxide is usually sold on concentration of 35% - so you absolutely have to know how to dilute it.

In 2006 the FDA released a warning against claims (scams) involving human consumption of 'food grade' Hydrogen Peroxide. This is a scam by people who want to make money off other people who either don't have common sense or don't know how to use the internet.

FDA Warns Consumers Against Drinking High-Strength Hydrogen Peroxide

for Medicinal Use Ingestion Can Lead to Serious Health Risks and Death

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers not to purchase or to use high strength hydrogen peroxide products, including a product marketed as "35 Percent Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide," for medicinal purposes because they can cause serious harm or death when ingested. FDA recommends that consumers who are currently using high-strength hydrogen peroxide stop immediately and consult their health care provider.

FDA is working to stop companies selling high-strength hydrogen peroxide from making illegal medical claims about their products. These claims are illegal because these products do not have FDA approval and are therefore being sold illegally for medical indications without any proven clinical value. The products can instead cause significant harm. As part of these ongoing efforts, FDA today issued Warning Letters to two firms illegally selling "35 percent hydrogen peroxide" products on Web sites for the treatment of AIDS, cancers, emphysema, and other serious and life-threatening diseases.

"This concentration is not approved by FDA for any purpose," said Dr. Steven Galson, Director of FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. "No one has presented any evidence that hydrogen peroxide taken internally has any medical value. In fact, consuming hydrogen peroxide in the manner touted by these websites could lead to tragic results."

FDA has never approved high-strength hydrogen peroxide to be taken internally and considers hydrogen peroxide at 35 percent strength dangerous, even if handled according to the manufacturer's directions. This high-strength hydrogen peroxide -- more than 10 times stronger than the solution used in over-thecounter

drugs to disinfect minor cuts -- is highly corrosive. Ingesting hydrogen peroxide can cause gastrointestinal irritation or ulceration. Intravenous (IV) administration of hydrogen peroxide can cause inflammation of the blood vessel at the injection site, gas embolisms (bubbles in blood vessels), and potentially life-threatening allergic reactions.

FDA previously warned consumers, in an April 1989 press release, about the illegal promotion of industrial-strength hydrogen peroxide to treat AIDS and cancer, following at least one related death in Texas and several injuries requiring hospitalization.

Further investigation is needed to explore the benefits of H2O2. The FDA often issues warnings regarding products that have real medical benefits. Also, the medical profession does not like to promote the benefits of natural health products that have real benefits because they cut into profits.

It is likely that your doctor will relcuctantly agree that there are benefits to vitamin C as an antioxidant. Iroinically the benefits of Vitamin C come from the hydrogen peroxide it produces in the blood stream.

Yes and No. Hydrogen peroxide is an oxidizer and a bleach. It is not intended for internal use. Most bottles are 3% hydrogen peroxide and 97% water. There are stronger strength solutions for commercial uses that go as high as 30 - 35%. This stronger solution can be harmful if taken internally and the FDA considers it to be dangerous. There are many people who feel that if it will kill bacteria off of a cutting board or on the bathroom sink and will whiten your teeth if you gargle with it means it must work inside the body as well. There are allegations for and against this. See the related links for more information and testimonials concerning the effectiveness of Hydrogen peroxide.

While some alternative health sites say its good for you it is not recommended by the vast majority of sources

Added to this answer :

The only peroxide that is for internal uses is food grade hydrogen peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide in the brown bottle at your local pharmacy has stuff added to it - it is wonderful for hundreds of uses in the house, but not for ingesting.

You need to be careful with Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide, you absolutely need to know the right dosage and know how to dilute it, but it is the only peroxide that you can drink.
