Probably not a good idea. an empty pool is always in danger of floating if ground water gets under it. If you do keep it while it is empty make sure the hydrostatic valve works and that no water is able to build up under any part of the pool.

Never drain an inground pool, ever. The pressure from the gound water will either pop it out of the ground (with gunite or fiberglass), or cause the liner to pull off the walls and floors and float (vinyl). You need to make sure the ground water is pumped down before taking water out of the pool. Even if you did empty the pool down already and it "seems" okay, by the time all the snow melts in the spring, and the ground water rises, you could be royally screwed.

I think it is not advisable to leave the swimming pool empty during winter times. Snows and falling branches of trees and leaves can harm your swimming pool. There are some pool covers that you can use and designed for winters like Pool Leaf Covers and Winter Covers.

NO you don't have to drain your pool in winter. Just add winter algicide this will prevent your pool water going green during winter. Ofcourse don't expect your pool to remain clean over winter, you will need to vaccum and test ur water for correct amount of chemicals.

When is the best time to drain your pool in Arizona?

In Arizona, it is best to drain your pool in the Winter. You might be wondering, why shouldn't I drain my Arizona pool in the summer? The answer to that is that if you drain your pool during the hot, dry Arizona summer months, you risk causing expensive damage to your swimming pool. The floor of the pool can crack due to the heat and lack of moisture. Draining your Arizona pool in the summer is also bad for the desert environment where water is scarce. The pool water that is drained out will mostly evaporate instead of being used to water the lawn or other plants on the property.

How long does it normally take to drain the water from the pump when closing an in ground pool for the winter?

Draining the water from the "pump" (I'm assuming you mean the filter) should only take a few minutes. How long it would take to drain the water in the pool down to the winterization level would depend on the size of your pool and the pump you are using.
