Public bathrooms ARE surprisingly SAFE!!! You can not get an STD from using the bathroom.. although you may feel dirty!! You are more likely to get a gastro-intestinal infection. Bathrooms are generally safe, even if they don't look the cleanest. Wash your hands with soap and hot water after using the restroom and avoid touching your mouth, nose or eyes. STDs usually occur from * oral/vaginal/anal sexual encounters with an infected person, one who may or may not exhibit symptoms of their STD. Your risk increases substantially if condoms were not used. * sharing needles with others during drug use * nurses and doctors, coming into contact with an infected patient's blood and mucuous secrections, have a lower potential to become infected * Some STDS, such as pubic lice, herpes and HPV can be transferred skin to skin. This usually occurs during close, extended contact with the infected person, usually during a sexual act. It is possible, however, to get urinary tract infections (UTI) or other ailments (such as diarrhea) from swimming in contaminated water, such as oceans, lakes, Swimming Pools, hot tubs. UTI's also can occur due to bacteria from sex without a condom being used or damp underclothing being worn near the genitals for long periods of time. In less industrialized countries, typhoid can result from coming into contact with food or water or bathroom facilities that have been contaminated by raw sewage.
