I suspect you have been doing something that you know you should not have done and you are expecting to be punished. If playing on the Xbox Live is important to you, it would seem that banning you from doing this would be an effective punishment.

It all depends on which part of the Xbox LIVE Code of Conduct and/or Xbox LIVE Terms of Use was violatied and how severe it was violated.
You will have an error message appear upon attempting to login stating that you're banned, and may show you the reason for being banned.
If not it's something wrong with the connection, Xbox Live could be under maintenance or you have been banned for some reason.
unpluging your xbox has the same effect as turning the console off. you are disconected from xbox live but will reconect when you turn it back on.
