Barbara R. Rossing (The Rapture Exposed) says that the Rapture has its origins in the nineteenth century beginning, according to one critic, with a young girl's vision. In 1830, in Port Glasgow, Scotland, fifteen-year-old Margaret MacDonald attended a healing service. There, she was said to have seen a vision of a two-stage return of Jesus Christ. The story of her vision was adopted and amplified by John Nelson Darby, a British evangelical preacher and founder of the Plymouth Brethren. Darby's theology has been accepted not only by members of the Plymouth Brethren but by millions of other Christians, perhaps because it sounds biblical.

The belief that Jesus will come again was not new, and Christians have always taught that Jesus will return to earth and that believers should live in anticipation of his second coming. Darby's new teaching was that Christ would return twice. The first return would be in secret, to "Rapture" his church out of the world and up to heaven. The only persons to remain on earth during the "tribulation" would be non-believers. However, it is claimed that these non-believers would be given the chance to repent and those who do would also be saved. Christ would return a second time after the seven years of global tribulation, to establish a Jerusalem-based kingdom on earth.

Now we know it is a nonsense to think of people being snatched up through the sky, as Darby had envisaged. John Nelson Darby has sunk into obscurity, apart from his followers in the Plymouth Brethren, and so should his theology. There will be no Rapture and the sky will not be filled with people taken bodily up into heaven.

The 'rapture' is a theological invention of John Nelson Darby, founder of the Plymouth Brethren, in the nineteenth-century. The concept has evolved over a period of nearly two hundred years, but is still essentially the same as originally proposed by Darby.

Barbara R. Rossing (The Rapture Exposed) says that Darby's new teaching was that Christ would return twice, first in secret to "rapture" Christians out of the world and up to heaven, then a second time after seven years of global tribulation for non-believers, to establish a Jerusalem-based kingdom on earth. Most proponents of the rapture claim that during the tribulation, non-believers will be given the chance to believe and then saved. Of course, even if these events do occur one day, they would only affect a tiny proportion of Christians since nearly all the Christians who have ever lived and nearly all non-believers would have quietly lived their lives and passed away in the fullness of time, oblivious to any "rapture".

Rossing says that according to one critic, the rapture has its origins with a young girl's vision. In 1830, in Port Glasgow, Scotland, fifteen-year-old Margaret MacDonald attended a healing service. There, she was said to have seen a vision of a two-stage return of Jesus Christ. The story of her vision was adopted and amplified by Darby. There is no good reason to believe there will ever be a rapture or that the events portrayed by Darby will ever occur. John Nelson Darby has sunk into obscurity, apart from his followers in the Plymouth Brethren, and so should his theology.

Another Answer:

According to The Bible some people will be saved during the Tribulation Period after the rapture. However, God will send a strong delusion and many people will take the mark and follow the anti-christ. TODAY IS THE DAY FOR SALVATION.

Another Answer:

There are a number of different views within the Christian tradition regarding the Rapture. In fact, the idea of the Rapture was not generally known through all the centuries of Christian history until the last quarter of the 19th Century, when it became popular in America through the Bible Conference Movement. Shortly later, the Rapture was included in the study notations in the Scofield Reference Bible, published in 1909, 1919 and (revised) 1967. The idea of the Rapture became wildly popular with the publication of Hal Lindsey's Late Great Planet Earth in 1970. Since then, the Christian publishing industry has made sure the lucrative market for Rapture-centered books, music and films has been well supplied.

There are relatively few verses in the Bible used to support the doctrine, including 2 Thessalonians 4:15-17 and Matthew 24:29-31. Outside American Evangelical and Fundamentalist culture, the doctrine of the Rapture is regarded as questionable.

According to John Nelson Darby, a nineteenth-century British evangelical preacher and founder of the Plymouth Brethren, you will only miss the Rapture if you do not believe in Jesus Christ. The 'Rapture' was a theological invention that states that Christ will return twice, first in secret to "Rapture" his church out of the world and up to heaven, then a second time after seven years of global tribulation for non-believers, to establish a Jerusalem-based kingdom on earth. Christians have always taught that Jesus will return to earth and that believers should live in anticipation of his second coming, but Darby's scheme differs in that Christians will be "raptured" up into heaven, before a seven-year tribulation of non-Christians.

If you miss the Rapture, according to Darby and his successors, you face a seven-year period of utmost torture and unbearable pain, but you will also be given the chance to believe and be saved. It is one thing to predict the Rapture, but it is an entirely different thing to demonstrate that it will ever happen. The Rapture has no genuine biblical support, so there is no good reason to believe there will ever be a Rapture or that those who miss the Rapture will suffer tribulation. John Nelson Darby has sunk into obscurity, apart from his followers in the Plymouth Brethren, and so should his predictions.

Is Matthew 24.40 the rapture?

Yes, it is referring to the rapture.Another Answer:The term 'rapture' is not in the Scripture and is a tradition of men. The verse in Matthew is in reference to the 2nd Coming of Jesus to rule on Earth at the blast of the 7th Trumpet. It will be a loud and visible event where the firstfruits will rise from their graves or on the earth to meet their King in the sky. It will not be a secret or silent 'rapture' as some teach since the 19th century.

Will there be a rupture?

Yes, I believe there will be a rapture absolutely. The Bible speaks of "the second coming" of Christ and the calling out of the saints repeatedly, which gives proof to the reality of this event. The rapture will be a glorious event, though it will happen in the time it takes for an eye to twinkle. When the angel blows the trumpet and calls the saved ones home, immediately all saved people will join The Father in Heaven. No one knows exactly when the rapture will occur, but the Bible gives us clues as to when the end times will be. Many of these signs can be found in the Books of Daniel and the Revelation.
